bike storage in brasil - 6 months - customs ?
 

hola travellers,

I will leave my bike behind for six months or so and travel japan and sibiria again on another bike.

any idea of leaving the bike for longer than 180 days legal in Brasil ? problems leaving without the bike ?

maybe I will ride it back to bsas and fly from there, just an idea today.

any comments welcome.

how are you enjoying beautiful south america?

i have it on reliable information that brasil immigration and customs do not cooperate with each other. there is no bike in your passport, so no problem there. customs only give 90 days for a bike, so exporting after 180 days could be a problem. brazilians in uniform are not nice people.

as you suggest, argentina might be better. there you get 9 months for a bike and most uniformed types are muy tranquillo.

thanks chris for the answer, ok I booked my ticket to leave from Sao Paulo in ten days.

the tenere will stay here in a friends house.

i will come back in november, than the bike is nearly a year in brazil. having it longer than 180 days here legal takes a long time for the paperwork, and of course I am not here to do it.

i am not worried about leaving the country with the expired document.

as Chris said, brazilians in uniform are not very nice and so far I had to show this document six or seven times to the police.

my worry is that a policeman on the road finds out that bike is longer than allowed in the country and confiscates it. Or I just don´t show it anymore, how does he know that I have it ?

any other ideas ?

Hello,
Be careful with Argentina, we got only three month for the temporary importation of our bikes. We have tried two different border stations and argued at the second one, because we wanted to deposit our bikes up to 8 or 9 month in Argentina.
It is possible to double this three month (more exact it is possible to get the time doubled, which you got at the border. That can be up to 8 month by law.), therefore we have now 6 month. But not more time !
Perhaps this phenomen with the three month is limited to the border with Chile. We have made this experience in October 2002 at the border stations of Los Andes and that beetwen San Pedro de Atacama and Jujuy.

talked to the customs - no way to leave the country legal without the bike - but no problem in brazil - thanks again chris for the info

police - I stoped showing the custom document - no problem

leaving brazil - I will find out in november - but got a biker friend working at the border with the customs.

I left my tenere in brazil from 01/2003 to 11/2003 and this is the way I got out:

at Foz do Iguacu I rode over the bridge to Paraguay in the early morning with all the traffic crossing the bridge to go to work. I stoped only at the paraguayan side of the bridge, and of course was told by immigration to go back to Brazil to get my exit stamp.

so I walked back, leaving the bike near the custom building, over the bridge. Got my exit stamp and walked back into Paraguay. Then I got my entry stamp for Paraguay and the paper for the bike.

Of course I did not show the customs document to the road police in Brazil. Only the German international rego and a passport full of stamps ...

no problem, so far, lets see what is going to happen when I enter brazil again ;-)
