bike insurance in Southern and East Africa

Hi there,

In 2 weeks our bikes will be arriving in Durban, South Africa. From there we'll be travelling up north agian toward Europe.

Does anyone know's what insurance to take? In West Africa we had the Carte Brun. Does the same exist in Souther en East Africa?

Thanx,
Corne

Yes, they have "Yellow card". It's valid from Sudan (or Egypt) and all the way south/east.

But, eeeehhh, why???

Ok,

I've read some threads about insurance...In west africa it's almost inpossibly to drive without valid insurance because of all the checkpoints...

I wonder if it's worht while driving with insurance in southern africa...What do you think?

Thanx
Corne

Hi Corné,

I travelled in Southern Africa about 10 years ago and as far as i remember in South Africa some insurance is in the petrol price. This is only for damage to people (this doesnt sound right, but I dont no other way to say it in english). Insurance for damage to vehicles or for your own vehicle has to be insured seprately. But this is not compulsory.
I was lucky to be able to do that with the compagny I worked for at that time. Don't know any names of compagnies.

For other country's in Southern Africa as far as I remember you have to buy it at the border everytime.

Another nice thing to know: South Africa, Botswana and Namibia have a 'custums union' with also means you don't have to have you Carnet stamped travelling at the border between these countries.

Have fun,

Peter
