Australian registered vehicle in Europe and UK
 

Hello

As far as I can gather I do not need a Carnet for an Australian registered vehicle in Europe and UK? But I do need to get compulsory insurance. Is this correct? Is there anything else that I need?

No Carnet required for (any rego) vehicle in Europe & UK.
Yes, compulsory insurance.
You don't say whether your overlanding, or air/seafreighting into EU/ UK.

I've been told some non-EU countries in Europe still require a Carnet? (eg: Russia and former Soviet bloc). But this may have changed. Can anyone confirm?

Generally speaking Russia is not considered to be part of Europe. Although there is Russia Territory on the Baltic just north of Poland called Kaliningrad Oblast.

In terms of eastern European countries, I suppose you are referring to Ukraine and the Baltic states? Please clarify because if they are in the EU or Schengen zone then there is no problem. http://europa.eu/about-eu/countries/index_en.htm

For Russia you will need a specific and different visa.

Just make sure you get the Greencard insurance.

NB. most greencard insurances for foreign registered bikes only cover EU and Schengen countries, you may need to get insurance at the border for non-EU countries such as Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Turkey, to name a few.

Your best bet is to start lookig through the Gov website for visas and carnet issues
