Australian needs TP insurance for GB reg bike (again)
Hi, ive got a couple questions, hope someone can help out.

All my research says if I buy a GB reg bike in the UK, any local insurer can cover me.
Does anyone know of a Insurance company that offers TP cover to Australian visitors.

Im assuming by this info I can ride legally for my 2 month trip across UK and EU.
Driving on licences from all other countries, and students on a foreign licence : Directgov - Motoring

I have a full Australian bike license and will bring a international drivers licence with me also. As a "Visitor" I assume thats acceptable, however the clause about "International Drivers Licence" being unacceptable is a little confusing.

The IDP is not accepted because it is so open to abuse.
They are just bits of paper issued by a motoring organisation that say you have a license in your home country.
Easily and cheaply forged so they aren't valid for insurance reasons.
Your full Aus license should be OK, but probably subject to a hefty loading for some spurious reason given by the Ins company.

Thanks that confirms what I was thinking my Oz licence will be acceptable for up to 12 months.

Now all I need is a insurance company in the UK to cover me,, anyone got any ideas.

You need to ring around, try Carol Nash, Adelaide, Bikeinsurer,Bennetts etc etc.
You really need a vehicle to get a quote as well, just pick what you think you will be buying and go from there.
You may find it easier to exchange licenses for the duration of your stay in Europe. Then change it back on your return to OZ.

Not necessary until you get to 12 months continuously being in UK. There is always a huge risk of DVLA losing things, denying you sent them, removing entitlements, demanding proof of passing original driving tests, etc etc. A nightmare organisation as shown on consumeractiongroup.co.uk

The significant point being that Insurers, knowing of her being on a Russian Licence and exiting UK regularly for 4 years, paid out on a claim without any query. Insurers look for the slightest reason to refuse claims.

Thanks fellas, ill call around when I arrive in London.

Currently ive sent out heaps of emails to insurers, all have come back negative but one, I will contact him again to try and clarify further.

So just to get this straight.

I believe I can use green card insurance for a GB reg bike in europe but not in GB where I intend to buy and ride from, the trick is to find someone to cover for the GB bit.
Also to legally transfer ownership in GB I believe insurance is needed.
Probably GB is the only country where visitors can legally own vehicles (?bikes).

No.
Proof of Insurance is not required when transferring.

In fact, transferring ownership is a private matter solely between the parties.
The DVLA is not interested in either the Owner or the Driver of a vehicle - but they require to know who is the "Registered Keeper". This is not necessarily the Legal Owner (i.e. such as rented or leased vehicles).

There are strict rules relating to RKs and notifying their changes. DVLA seem to 'loose' an unreasonably high number of documents are persue literally hundreds of people each day for penalties for allegedly failing to notify change in RK who were adamant they had sent it by post - all that the Law requires! DVLA then say "No you didn't and you can't prove you did so we want money"

DVLA has hundreds of instances of people successfully defending themselves against DVLA's relentless persuit of penalties by intimidation of people who had correctly followed all that was required of them by Law.
Sadly part of the British Government behaving badly.
Not a nice organisation.

Interesting, ill copy everything I send to the DVLA then, cheers.

Im now in London, luckly I have found a friend of a friend to organize legal ownership and insure a bike for me, so all should be good. Seems like thats the only way to do it,,, if you dont bring a bike from home and green card it.
