Australia to UK - One way
 

Hi folks,
After searching through this fantastic forum i can't find much about one way trips.
I own an Australian registered KLR (tho I'm British) and plan to ride the bike to the UK next year. I know that some asian and african countries will want to see a carnet
So......
Does a carnet from australia come into the equation still or, as I won't be returning the bike to australia, does this defeat it's purpose?
Can I get a carnet issued by the Uk (even tho it's an aussie bike) on the basis that I will end up there and not be importing the bike to other countries along the way?
I'll keep researching but if someone can help pls post.

Exactly what I had to do.

Bought a bike in Australia, got Carnet issued from RAC UK and then had to go through the lengthy and expensive process to import it to the UK once I'd ridden it 30,000 kms home where it was promptly stolen.

If you've been out the UK/EU for over 12 months, I think you might be able to avoid the import duties/VAT etc. FWIW, Inland Revenue valued my bike at £1600 and I had to pay £400 duties/VAT plus the SVA test, registration fee's etc. It failed the SVA test initially as it didn't have a bloody 5w running light in the headlight which I had to fit in order to pass.

It's good to know I can get a UK carnet while is australia.I hadn't thought too much about importing the bike at the end of the trip but I suppose I would have to eventually if I wanted to sell it without coming back to austrlaia.

If I choose to sell the bike while in another country do I lose the deposit with the UK carnet issuer?

I just would like to travel freely and make my mind up on the destination, time frame etc as I go along but still be able to get into countries that require a carnet. I don't have to head for the UK it just seems you have to pick and end country if you want a carnet :mchappy:

If anyone has more advice on one-way tripping/open ended travel pls post!

If you are IN Oz then I would have thought it's a lot easier to get a carnet there. It doesn't matter where the carnet is from. I'm German, ride a French registered bike with a German carnet. My partner has a Thai bike with a UK carnet. All it is is a financial guarantee that you will export your bike again from the countries that require it.

To discharge the carnet you will probably have to provide copies of official import docs. Not sure what happens if you want to discharge it and keep travelling, i.e. America.

thanks for that input. I'm getting a better idea of how the carnet would work in my case. I suppose I thought you needed the carnet issued by the country you intended to travel to (and when you arrive you get it discharged). But it seems I could have it issued in Oz and then contact NRMA or whoever when I get to the end of my trip (and have imported the bike) to get my deposit back.

If I'd wanted, I could have sent the Carnet back to the RAC in Turkey after I left Iran as it was no longer required for me. You would then get 50% of your deposit back etc or as in my case, I'd used my flat as security so I got that sorted.
