Australia to Europe One Way - Carnet

Hi folks,

I am currently in Oz and recently bought a bike here. I am considering overlanding back to Germany or UK after my Oz travel.

How would this work with the Carnet? I understand when you don't bring the vehicle back you lose your money for the Carnet.

Could I just buy a used bike frame with papers in Germany and report my bike scrap?

Cheers,

Frank

Not so Frank. You simply send the completed carnet document back to Australia where the bond will then be released. All that is required to get your money back is to show that you have an exit stamp matching the entry stamp for each country you visited that required a carnet.

Thanks for the info farqhuar. Do you know if Germany requires a carnet for an Australian registered motorbike?
If yes I would be stuck as I would not get my exit stamp...

You just return the carnet to the issuer and then you'll have to register the bike in Germany.

No none of western europe requires a carnet - not certain about all of eastern europe but last year I rode from Korea to Italy via Russia / Scandinavia all without a carnet.

Good news! Thanks fellows!

Just doing the same with a car...
if your are german and wanna import into germany in the long run. ADAC can issue carnet(which is cheaper and less bond) when you import in germany you get your bond back. tax in germany is 10+19%

I'm leaving Oz in 1 week and just collected my carnet. Unfortunately I need to obtain an exit stamp from Australian customs and it states I have to bring the bike back to Oz for an entry stamp in order to get my deposit back. I will not bring the bike back to Oz.

I did not intend to pay taxes and customs for my old bike. Would it be based on the carnet bike value? After I did another 40 thousand km on the bike???

Can I report my bike as scrap or stolen when I reached my destination?

(I had already tried to get a German or UK carnet, but this was not possible as the bike is registered in Australia.)

That's strange, my bike was Australian and I got a carnet from RAC UK no problem.

The problem might be that Australia started the carnet system from 2009. Therefore the whole situation has changed.

Is it still possible to report my bike as scrap or stolen when arriving at my destination point?

What would happen if you lost your carnet on the way?

Are the tax and customs duty based on the carnet bike value? Even if it's 1 year later?

MikeS 26 Oct 2010 12:32

If you're planning on importing it anyway, you'll have to pay the VAT and import duty regardless, not too sure where that leaves you with your carnet deposit however.

The Finnish Automobile Association (who no longer issue carnets, but did so just 2-3 years ago) demanded I get a stamp from the Finnish customs into the last page of the document, that´s actually a confirmation that the vehicle is back in Finland, before they will release the bond.

I had the carnet stamped out of the last country, where I´d used it (Australia), and also I had all the proper entry & exit stamps from all other carnet countries as well. But still I had to wait, until the bike had travelled over 2 months by ship to get home, and then I got this precious stamp.

Was a strange episode, because it should not be any of their business, where the vehicle has been left, unless it has been left in a carnet-country, right?? Later on, I heard about some people playing some tricks with them a few years earlier, may be that was the reason they now demanded this. But I still did not fully understand their position, as they were holding up a considerable sum of money (5000 euros).

Hey Frank! (does the pic below mean anything to you?)

As I think you may already know, I have a NZ-registered bike that's travelling under cover of a Kiwi carnet, issued by NZAA (New Zealand Automobile Association); and - similar to you - we're currently on a one-way ride from NZ to Europe /the UK. BTW, I have no intention of returning to NZ.

Although the carnet has been 'stamped out' by NZ Customs, there is no place/area throughout the whole document to facilitate a re-rentry stamp (back into NZ).

On the front (yellow) cover it states in emboldened upper case:

"ON EXPIRY, THE CARNET MUST BE RETURNED TO THE ASSOCIATION WHICH DELIVERED IT TO THE HOLDER"

There's no mention about needing to bring the bike back to NZ in order to redeem and get my deposit/bond returned.

Furthermore, there is, perhaps for obvious reasons, another enboldened and underscored message on page #2 (just inside the yellow cover) that states:

"NEW ZEALAND CUSTOMS

PLEASE DO NOT STAMP ON

INTERNATIONAL VOUCHERS
"

Clearly there are some strange and inconsistent differences between the various carnet-issuing countries .. :confused1:

AND if this is you - the same Frank (as below - that includes me & 'er indoors), then please do keep in touch mate; perhaps a PM or email sometime .. eh? :thumbup1:

Cheers

Just a thought but as you don't need a Carnet for the UK (think that's right anyway) you just send off your completed carnet after the last country that requires it like Iran for example.

As the bike is from Oz anyway as mine was, you really shouldn't need to get it stamped out of the country unless as you say the procedures have changed. My shipping agent never requested it anyhow.

Franconian 31 Oct 2010 06:27

The procedures must have changed. It looks like the Australian Automobile Association just added another page to the carnet. It has a field which needs to be stamped out by Australian customs when leaving Oz and stamped in when returning.
It also states on the cover letter that it has to be stamped in order to get the deposit back.
Also Perkins (shipping agent) only accept it "stamped out".

The whole carnet thing must be different in every country. In Australia they did not even future date it. Apparently it is against the law. In Germany it is common practise to future date a carnet, I believe up to 30 days...

@Keith:

Good to hear from you. When are you coming back to Oz?
