Russia - Vehicle temporary import

Hi,

I'm trygin to clarify if it is essential that the owner of a vehicle you intend to travel with in Russia (i.e. temporarily import) travels along with it.

In other words, if I buy a car in Scandinavia and have the previous owner register it under his name, can I then drive it into Russia (Murmansk-Talinn is the idea) without any hassle?

If you've done it before, I'd love to hear your experiences. Also, if you know places/people I should ask this to, please forward the info!

Thanks a lot! Seb

I have only taken vehicles in/out of Russia that are registered in my name in UK. But I understand you can take a vehicle in that is not registered in the name of one of the travellers with it, provided you carry a letter of authority from the registered owner. Others on HUBB have done it without difficulty.

Although not required, I would suggest a photocopy of their Passport details page to add to authencity of the name and signature as well as having the letter translated into Russian.

You will need the original Registration Document whether in your name or not.

Don't forget to buy insurance at the border and have an International Driving Permit to complement your regular Licence.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
