Im in Israel now,I cross 22countrys from Maroco - Cape town-Cario riding Us register bike.
with out Carnet,I took advise from Mrwhite,When you coming to Egypt ask for TIP and pay $800 Refundable-Deposit which I got back to the penny when I left Egypt to Israel,lost $70 when I exange from Egypt money to Us$
its a lot better than Canada carnet that cost $750 non refundable.
and Kenya border,easy dont stop at custom and just ride using the other gate like

I travelled with my original documents and with my company car the transafrica.

With Benin i had used the carnet - till SA.

Why fake something? That can bring you to jail!

But to be honest - the customs will stamp everything you provide.

If a Police checkpoint check you in detail to bribe you - f****. - they have the time to check the carnet. Also if you have an accident.

Dont make yourself to the target that way - just for safe some bucks.

And dont believe that guys who tells here some stupid stuff here. When someone has paid some 1000$ bribes - be shure - that he has done illegal stuff - and was not able to contact his embassy because of this...

There are two risks to see.

A.) The Value of the vehicle /bike

B.) To have to pay the import tax of the vehicle.

For A.) you can save your ass with an cheap vehicle - or with an insured one.

For B.) In some countries it is maybe not enough to provide an Police report of the stolen vehicle - and you have to pay the Import Tax.

I did some research about B.) - but i didnt found one sample of it - who the vehicle owner really has to pay the import tax. Maybe my focus was to much concentrated to africa - but - can you provide a blog link or a link inside of the hubb - where a guy really has to pay?
Without 1-2 examples, this szenario seems to be a very theoretical.

When you have to look after your bucks that way - how can you help yourself when you have a real problem on your way? If one of the expensive parts goes bad - are you able to restock them - when you have to cheat at this early level?

For africa i think you can make your carnet by yourself - and they arent able to check if it is valid. But it could make your live complicated, the carnet has to show your name and adress - at least the name you cant fake without to organize an fake passport - and there you steps in the criminal area.

Faking official documents could backfire badly at any moment. Like in the carnet case, if you happen to have an accident, and it then turns out, that your vehicle has been illegally in the country. Also I'd be surprised, if there isn't an online register for such documents in 2013. Not all borders have computers, though, but they're getting more common (this thread is +10 years old).

Maybe somebody thinks the risk is worth taking, and I don't have a problem with that at all, just be aware of what you're doing.

IF you have time, is easy,it took me two days,first custom manager told me, no way:nono:, no carnet no Egypt go back to Sudan.

few hrs,later he try me to pay $550 for some one to fly from Cairo with Carnet(I said no way,in nice way)then he whent down to $500,and the day was gone(custom works from 10am-2pm)
next day I came back again with smile and nice hand shake(good morning how are you?)
We sat down in his office,he offer me a tea,and from there it was nice and easy.:D
when you reach Aswan which is the first port in Egypt.
ask for TIP Temp,Import,Paper or pay tax( refundable$800) like I did 2weeks ago.
Remember to use official Bank is just out side the gate(no black market) you get the best exchange.:thumbup1:

Romnek, Big thanks mate! Confirms what I have always believed! All countries have provision for tempory vehicle import and Egypt is no different!

Africans don't get carnets and they go back and forth. We have never had a carnet and have visited many countries with a vehicle. Yes, we have time!

So instead of buying a carnet, you were able to deposit $800 into a bank account of the customs, all documented, then using the said deposit enter Egypt.
And this $800 deposit, is payment for your temporary import document?

Im not sure, I did not have fixer(why pay $)I remember some one official came to office and they were talking in arabic and they agree on 4801 Egypt money=aprox$800.

Yes, I got all the money back,when I cross to Israel 7-1-2013
Make sure you change Egypt money to $dollar or Euro's on Egypt side,there is Hilton hotel 200meters from border.
I lost $70dollars on the exchange on egypt side but if I had to exchange in Israel would be $150,so change money in Egypt.

Over all, I would say $70 for Egypt transit is a good result. :thumbup1:
