Washington to S America - Sept 2010

Hoping to head south from Bellingham, Washington around the end of Aug. 2010. Expect to be gone 6 months plus and do a lot of camping and see lots of interesting people and places. Anyone headed that way. ME: Retired pilot (no jets), extensive travel (except S America), politically - extreme moderate (maybe slightly left), high school Spanish (52 years ago), 68 with 2007 KLR 650.

You're a year behind me; I left last September and will return sometime this summer, also on a KLR (rapidly aging as I speak). I'll just note that 6 months is a good amount of time for a one-way trip (assuming Ushuaia) but very scant if you're riding both directions.

I got an email notice saying you'd PM'd me, but there's no PM in my box. Use my email: markharf at yahoo dot com.

enjoy,

Mark

Hopefully see you on route...

Hello there,

I'm currently sitting behind a desk in London but hopefully come July/August I'll be heading in roughly the same direction so hopefully we'll be able to share some miles.

My very rough plan is to import my bike to New York & ride up to Prudhoe during June before heading South all the way down to Argentina. I might even call in on the HUBB meeting in Petrolia, California on my way South.

A million & one things to sort out before departure but fingers crossed I'll see you on the road!

Uggawish & Smudger,
Will definitely see you guys along the way. Wife and I leave at the end of August. If you need anything or a place to crash, let us know, we may have very little furniture by then.:scooter:

Hi Smudger,
If you come down from Prudhoe through Vancouver and south along the coast you'll pass right by us. Stay a while and and see this area and then we can blast off from here together.

Hi Daryl,
If you ever come south of the border get in touch. We're at Lake Samish, just south of Bellingham.

Thanks for the offers gents - very much appreciated! All being well I should be passing by so I’ll definitely call in. It’ll be good to meet up with fellow bikers heading in roughly the same direction & I’m already looking forward to sharing some miles. I know solo riding can become a bit of a grind after a while, especially at border crossings! I too intend to camp where possible & I’m more interested in the people & places then I am in breaking any speed or distance records.
I have noticed a few posts from other bikers (Novissima, Bruce P, Olyflyer) heading in the same direction about the same time & will post something a little closer to departure to see who is where.
I hope all your preparations go smoothly & thanks again for the offers of assistance. See you in the sunshine.
Smudger.

Agree, let's get in touch closer to the time.
Also don't forget about the Canada West HU Meeting.

Damn... my quiet progress has been spotted :-)

Yes, departure date set for Sept 8th, looks like we will miss most HUMMs.

We will be coming down the Eastern Seaboard, so may start looking for people as we go.

Camping will also be on our agenda, and as we have 6 months I should not be in my usual hurry up mode :-).

We should be easy top spot, not a lot of XJR1300s and Aprilia Pegassos out that way :-)

UK to USA to AU in September

Smudger - sounds like your dates are the same as mine.
I'm just trying to work out how to freight my bike over to North America.
Are you going into Canada or the US? Various stories here tell that one is easier than the other.

Would like to hook up for some of the journey if poss.

Hey just realised my name was mentioned in here

I'm flying into San Fran on the 18th Aug and then heading to Portland to buy a bike then try and head to the HUMM if I can sort out the paperwork for the bike in time, any advice on a foreigner buy a bike in OR?

I'm going to be stopping in Mexico to hopefuly be able to learn more than ordering 2 beers, and swearing in Spanish

I'll be on A G650X Challenge

See youse on the road!

now I think I should start actually planning this trip
