Wales, top to bottom off road

Hi guys,
Evo magazine drove a Rangie the length of Wales off road or on unsurfaced roads. Wondered if anyone has done similar and/or was interested in doing it one weekend?

Did they publish the route? I would imagine a large proportion of it would have had to have been on land that they had special permission to use, I wouldn't have thought it possible otherwise, not without using a fair bit of paved roads to join other routes together. That said I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Ditto - sounds like mostly private land to me. Would love to give it a go on my DRZ though!

We have a route planned for as much as you can do legally. Currently the route goes from Chepstow up into Snowdonia and out to Owestry.

That sounds like a brilliant idea. If someone organises it I'd happily volunteer myself as translator and peace broker (OK, not essential posts, but I dont have much else to offer!).

I would really love to do this ride though.

probably not this weekend but i was interested to see how much of sarn helen still exists and is rideable would make an interesting ride the length of wales.

Hi,

Sounds very interesting did Evo say if was a complex or challenging drive?

I'd be interested in doing this in my defender, in the future.

contact name for Wales North/South off-road

I heard earlier this year that Simon Pavey (Paris-Dakar rider) who runs the BMW off-road courses in the Brecon Beacons was planning something of this nature soon. You're right that a lot of the best route involves crossing private land, but Simon was confident that he could get permission for much of the access through his contacts. Perhaps you could try to contact him directly to find out if his plan is progressing.

I'll dig out the mag, it's possible a lot was across private land as it was organised by land rover. From memory they started near Trap and followed mainly public roads which were mainly unsurfaced.
I'll report back on the issue number if anyone who's got four wheels wants to have a butchers.

Hey Burtieboy, I'd be interested in taking a peek at your route if possible? Where are you based?

And when are/were you planning on going?

hi Chaps i did wales N to S about 10yrs ago in my 90 i used a combination of Glyndwrs way, sarn helen & nant y moch then onto strata florida with lots of ohers going east west thrown in to make a long weekends green laning.

I used to be the dyfed/powys ROW rep for the green lane association(GLASS) so had lots of lane info, unfortunately sarn helen is closed except for the section between aberdulais and banwen now under TRO restriction(much political wrangling going on at mo with the owners of walters arena that want further restrictions on the byway passing through it) simon will know about that no doubt as he uses the site.

many other tracks in wales have suffered the same fate due to the NERC act as most N/S routes were RUPPS

I know friends in a local MC trail club that are using sarn helen, however i also have another friend in the s.wales police off road team that are looking to make examples of pple they catch on sarn.

BE AWARE the river crossing is a favorite spot to put the bike down and lie down for a "nap", if you stop to see if he's ok you get knabbed with no need to chase.! that came from the horses mouth.

so... it can be done but mainly on private land the old long routes are gone, i hear the forrestry commision are looking into sustainable routes for bikes in wales.

regards all

by way of a reply to Mr fox lots of Sarn H still exists as it was a roman military road that went N to S with many forts or day camps on the route, if you look closely at an ordnance survey map road will see the name sarn helen crop up all the way on various bits of the A470 although sarn hellen followed the top or upper sides of the hills as opposed to the valleys where possible it is these sections that can be seen labelled on the maps.

lots of SH are drivable albeit on the A470.

Nothing set in concrete, gotta try and get a route organised first! I'll pop something in this thread when we're going though.
