Uzbekistan (places along the "Silk Road") - leaving end of April 2013

Hi all,

my plan is to start end of April and take about 3 month.

Living south of Munich, Germany I intend to take a ferry from Italy - Greece (Igoumenitsa), Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic ...
Alternate return route: Russia, Baltic States, Poland, ...

I want to take some time to visit nice places on the route.

My bike is a Honda Africa Twin RD07A, 1998, about 80.000km.

If there is someone who has a similar interest in doing this kind of trip and would be interested in joining me, then get in touch. If you are on the road there anyway, contact me.

Tips and suggestions are welcome!

Lothar

Hi Tom,

are you from DownUnder, mate?

Yes, I should take a ferry across the Dardanelles about the same time. But will travel south from there at first.

Might see you there - Lothar

Hi Mehmet, ill be in Instanbul for a few weeks in late March April be nice to meet up. A few of the guys I have met in my travels have visited you Henning from Denmark heading south through Africa who I met in Nairobi and Mike Lewis an American guy I rode from Nairobi to Egypt with.

I was in Turkey in June on my way to Europe from Africa and travelled into Mersin via ferry from Egypt then road along the coast road (what a ride) to Antalya (beautiful coastline), up to Pummlakale pools (amazing) Selcuk ( fantastic ruins) Izmir Canakkale and over to Gallipoli for obvious reasons being an Aussie.

I left Instanbul off my list at the time as I knew I was heading back down that way as I am now, im really looking forward to getting back there, you have a beautiful country only matched by the people I met on my way through.

This time Ill be going through Instanbul Ankara and Cappadoccia and over towards the Stans. Im going to be organising my visa's for the Stans in Instanbul and Ankara which im hoping will go ok. I know theres the Armenian and Kazak embassys in Instanbul so im hoping to do those in my time in Instanbul. Ive been onto the Stantours website in regards of the letters of introduction but as im not sure when im going to be there and where im going at this stage it makes it tricky to ge them just yet.

Hopefully crossing into Turkey goes ok this time as when I came in via ferry last time it took me 8 hours and was chaotic but in saying that the ferries had just started up again so im sure they were still sorting stuff out as noone seemed to know what the hell was going on.

I Know cops ride the Gs 800's down there so might give my bike a full overhaul while im there buy some tyres and get a chain and sprockets sent down to your place while im there as im probably going to need them beofre i get to the other side of Russia.

Talk soon Mehmet and to everyone else safe travels hope to catch you all on the road somewhere.

Sheldon

Lado I caught the (Igoumenitsa) to Bari ferry and cost me I think 40 or 50 Euro im not 100% sure now but not much and it was for me and the bike. You leave the port at Igoumenitsa and straight on the highway from the boat its all really straight forward if you havent done that section of the trip before.

Hi Tom,

a pommy wouldn´t likely write 'G'day' :-))

It would be the 28th of March? I´ll take the ferry from Ancona on the 22nd of April.

If you would like to pop in, write me a PM for the address.

Cheers - Lothar

No visum for Iran

Hi all,

did not get a visa for Iran so far and will leave home on sunday, 21.04.

Just found this on IranianVisa.com:
"According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there will be some restrictions for land entry into Iran from 10 Mar. 2013 until further notice.

Tourists arriving on public transportation (trains, coaches, ferries) can still enter Iran with a valid visa. However, immigration officers may want to match their point of entry with the itinerary submitted with their visa application.

Tourists traveling with their own vehicles (cars, motorcycles, bikes, on foot) need to mention this in their visa application, so that their program is confirmed before issue of the visa. Those arriving on land borders may be deported, even holding a valid visa, if they have not mentioned this in their visa application.

The above points are our best understanding based on quotes by the MFA's visa officers and IranianVisa.com is not responsible for the accuracy of these information."

Just for your info.

We will travel round The Black Sea now.

See ya

Lothar
