Travelling to Ukraine Anyone in July 09?

Hi everyone,

In the last week of July into August I will be riding through Europe to the Ukraine and wanted to know if anyone else will be travelling this way? I will be stopping in Krackow, poland, for a couple of nights to see the salt mines and Auswitz other than that that nothing planned before riding onto Lviv, Kiev. I may stop in Prague again and ride up through the capathian mountains.

I have riden solo to Prague, Bratislava and Budapest last year, but fancied a rding budy this time. I have done long distances before, Prague to East Anglia in one hit (1000 miles in 17 hours) but this time I wanted to take in the back roads, I see 350, 400 miles a day easy. I will be taking a tent this time to keep costs down, but mixing between camping, hostels and hotels.

About me, early 30's, riding a sports tourer but keep things below 100mph, usually cruise at 90 or below, so no speed demond.

If your going out that way and fancy hooking up, drop me a line.

Cheers

sounds like a good trip

I planned to do a similar trip last year and ended up chickening out as i had no one to go with. I ended up riding out through Romania instead. I would like to go out to Kiev however im turned off by the difficulty getting insured and the stories of corruption. Im travelling about the same time as you and ive planned as far as Gdansk for aug 1 and 2. Kiev could be good if the visa and insurance is cheap.

Im a 28 year old Aussie and ive got a Suzuki DL VStrom 1000

Hi, I really fancied Transalvania, but was not brave enough, so instead I decide on Ukraine (Where is the logic there???).

I am struggling to get any clarity on the insurance situation for Ukraine. I have heard it is not needed, but you can get thrid party insurance at the boarded? I still really want to see the place, but I really need cover on my bike. I have heard good and bad about the corruption, but I guess this is everywhere and have also been told very good stories. Either way these are what adventures are about, good or bad.

My dates are pretty fixed due to work, 3 weeks off, Previously I have done big miles each day, 650, even 1000 once, but this time I want to keep it around 350 per day, getting out of France as fast as possible! Hence 3 weeks.

If you fancy Kiev then that cool, let me know. I ride a fazer 1000.

Ukraine

Yeah Romania was a bit like the wild east. I really enjoyed it as it was the first time i felt like i was pushing bounderies. I did ride solo and the only reason i went for Romania over Ukraine last year was the fact that it was part of the EU and my insurance would therefore cover it. Ive heard that for the ukraine you can purchase third party insurance at the border however id want to have comprehensive.

Getting out there id think going through Lublin in Poland and crossing there would have been easier as its a straight raod out to Kiev. Id prob stop in Rivne in Ukraine and break the journey up before going on to Kiev. I have the time go however ive got my ferry booked to return back on the 16th aug. So id think a few days in Kiev and then motor home.

Im on board if we can sort the insurance

this is the trip i have planned for this year should Ukraine be to difficult

Bike trip 09

anyway im interested

Good route, when in Lithuania, say hello to my ex girlfriends lol .

Yep, the insurance is a big issue, my plan was stop in Lviv, then ride to Kiev and a quick run to Chernobyl. I am curently trying to identify comprehensive insurance, but am struggling to find anyone, again this is the clincher for me, even TPFT would be ok.

If I cannot get it, I will re-assess my trip route. I don't book anything in avance, not even ferries or tunnel, but may plan abit more this time.

If you find anyone who can insure for Ukraine, let me know and its a goer. I am pretty fixed on dates because of work requirements

Ukraine 09

I didnt organise anything last year either however ended up spending more than i wanted to on accomodation and it meant i had to waste time looking for places to stay instead of focusing on relaxing and seeing places of interest. some planning also prevents me from pushing on when i should really stop and rest. I did some rediculous distances last year (Hungary to Calias and straight on to Birmingham in 24hours non stop being the most stupid).

I just had a ring around to a few insurers including my own and its not possible to get insurance to travel to these countries. Insurance is bought at the border however id be hoping that third part fire and theft insurance could be bought also.

So i guess the option is to chance it and see if you can get insurance at the border or make alternate plans.
