USA East to West - Ideas and company?

Hello everyone, This is my first thread so be kind.

I'm from Hertfordshire, I'm 23, I recently bought a DR-z400s and I'm off to America soon and on to Australia ... So the plan is to use HCtravel who will ship my bike to Brunswick, there I will stay near St Augustine and volunteer at the St Augustine Wild Reserve for a short while, move on to Miami where I will visit a friend and then head west.

I posted a thread on the advrider forum as I know there's a big American base on there and had some great advice so hoping to build on that here.

Looking for an suggestions or people who want to join along or who will be on their own way looking for a pit stop beer part way.

Cheers :)

At the minute Minneapolis is quite far off my route but if the wind changes I'll let you know!

Thanks :) ... Liam

I leave Alaska later in year though. Will be looking for others to come along, especially those who are interested in filming.

Just checked your website Steven, which looks awesome!, and it says 137 days ... I'll be in Aus by then. I'm only in the US for 7 weeks as I can't afford much more but I'll keep an eye on your posts and journey! Have a great ride mate :)

Hello Liam

I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma, pretty much right in the middle of the US. Route 66, I-40 and I-44 all run through Tulsa and I live a half mile from Route 66 and one mile from I-44. If you pass this way, let me know a bit ahead of time and we shall have a coffee or a beer, my treat!

Thanks very much TM :D If I do get on the TAT the map I have runs through Tulsa and if I can't get on the TAT I will most likely do some of route 66 ... wouldn't be experiencing America if I didn't do a bit! So when I'm over I'll let you know where abouts I am and if it's a coffee or a beer situation haha! Thanks again!

I'm in the same "boat"!

Hey hey,

I'm flying to Atlanta in the start of may and will be looking to buy a motorcycle to do some cross country on.

When do you plan on taking off and what is your itinerary?

Cheers from Don the Dane!

LiamH91 1 Apr 2014 22:18

Hey Don,

What date on the start on May? I'm arriving in Miami 14th April and picking up the bike (vstrom) a couple of days later and hanging around until I get the permanent title in my name (possibly a week). By cross country if you mean the TAT I would be more than happy to have some company :D

You seen the Chattahoochee-Oconee national park just out of Atlanta? Some great camping there for $6 a night so I plan on staying there for a night or two!

Cheers,

Liam

Hey mate,

I am shipping my bike to LA in mid August and will be headed to NYC via the southern states.

Can catch up if our routes/times cross

Hola Liam,

Will be flying in to ATL from Bogota, Colombia no later than May 7th. Currently looking at DR650 outside Atlanta - but there is no telling if it is THE bike. Were you planning on doing bigger part of the TAT or just some?

Cheers,

Don

I'll be gone by June unfortunately but if you'd like to buy the V-strom off me I could find someone to leave it with in LA? Might save you quite a bit of cash? It will have full panniers and a top box for bits n bobs :) just a thought ... oh and by the way they do "no water needed" shower gel now :0 madness.

I'm hoping to hit a few of the southern states too so if you want some ideas feel free to follow my blog and hopefully it will help out.

I'm not sure yet ... I would like to do a fair whack of the TAT but it depends how to bike is off road/how I am on the bike off road haha! And I will have been in the USA for around 3 weeks by May 7th so get me a shout when you arrive and we'll see where we are :D

donspanfelner 2 Apr 2014 19:33

Oh, dang - but sure, I'll holla at ya when I arrive! ;)

Just advice - my brother rode Atlanta to Rio de Janiero on a V-Strom and one thing he said (although he LOVED the bike) is that it is not particularly good off road. So if you're planning to do off roading you would be better off with a KLR650 or DR650 - but hey, this is just a little info, I'm sure you'll have a blast no matter what! :)

CHEERS!

LiamH91 2 Apr 2014 19:52

The V-strom was what came up at a good price and from someone who was travelling on it and looked after it will. As for the off road I will keep it to simple off road and slow :) Be waiting to hear from you mate!
