US to Panama - Jan. Feb. Mar. 05 - with wife

If you are interested in joining us for all or part of this trip, or if you have any advice for us first timers, we would love to hear from you.
I am 58 and my wife is 40 something (has been for a couple of years now) Tentative itinerary is: Jan 5, 2 weeks down the west coast of Mexico, a week to Costa Rica, 3 weeks in Costa Rica with a side trip to Panama Canal, then three weeks working our way back with a stop in Cozumel Mexico. Travel is on a HD Touring Bike so we will stick to the major highways where ever possible. We plan to use Lonely Planet type guide books to control expenses, but with a real emphasis on safety and security. Lots of touring experience but this will be our first bike trip outside of Canada or the US.

If you're going down the west coast of Mexico, try to stop in Puero Arista at Jose's. He's a Canadian that's been there for thirty years and has motorcycle friendly camping and cabinas. He is a chef, and likes to put out a great meal in the evening. Community eating, with other travelers from around the world.

To find the place, turn left on the first dirt road before the tee. Tell him I sent you.

To crose into Guatemala, use the La Mesilla crossing. Same highway as San Cristobal. The best hotel in San Cristobal is "Mission Colonial", located in the old part of the city. Very nice and only $20 for a single.

To KC Fire
Thanks for the information. Will definitely try to stop in Puero Arista, and let them know you sent us.
Why do you recommend we cross at La Mesilla? It seems to be about 100 miles further than crossing ass Tapachula.

I agree with kc, la mesilla is a better crossing (less busy), plus the roads are more fun (mountains...). I also confirm jose's cabana in puerto arista is a welcome address. I took a similar trip a year and half ago , also start in january from minneapolis, a little nippy but I was heading south.....
Have fun down there.

Hi 'lend',
Kate and I have been touring the US & Canada for the past 13 months on our GS BMWs and are entering Mexico bound for Panama on 29th November 2004 to arrive mid March 2005. We plan to spend 6 weeks in Mexico and should be in Costa Rica about the same time as you. We would be pleased to meet up with you sometime on your travels.

To Phil & Kate - will be in Puerto Vallarta January 9-16. Should cross into Guatemala on January 22. Hope to meet up with you some place south of there.

To Niels-Traveler - ask us again in April. 3 months, all day, everyday, together will be a first for us; even after 23 years of marriage.

Hi Lend,
We will be in the Yucatan in a few days and Guatemala late Jan 2005. Click on the profile button for our email address. Drop us a line nearer the time and we shall try and meet up. Good luck on Mexican roads - topes (speed humps) will be a nightmare on your low slung Harley!!!
Phil and Kate.
