Anyone out there this summer?
I wonder if there is any way to organise a log of riders out there for possible meetings other than chance.

Good luck!

I tried to organise the very same trip, but in reverse, and hit a bit of a brick wall with the nepal-china section. Try declaring yourself as a Rally and getting through that way - worked well for 2 guys I met in Uzbekistan (in a 4x4).

I had to settle for Turkey - Stans - Mongolia...... then had to settle for Kazakhstan - Russia - train to Moscow because my engine in dying..... bugger

If I had the money would love to get a Japanese bike and join you, but thats too big an if for me I'm afraid!

Will be back in the UK in three weeks or so if you fancy some fresh beta from the stans, but theres not that much to tell really - very easy going, very few problems (just don't, whatever you do take an Italian bike unless you have all the spare parts and tools you could conceivably need)

Henry - what about tyres

Hi Henry

Just noted that you rode from Mongolia to the UK. What did you do about tyres, did you carry some with you?

Would love to know. Where can they be bought in Russia or Mongolia?

sorry for not noticing the extra posts (please e-mail me if anyone wants more info - might get a quicker response)

As for tyres - I took two continental TKC80's - these tyres are fantastic! Great grip in the dirt (not brilliant in deep dry sand - but what is??) There is a bit of weight to deal with, and you can pick up tyres in a lot of Places (Almaty, Novosibirsk, probably UB), but I had the tyres anyway, so took them. Helps give you that "I'm going a hell of a long way" look, ,and might have had something to do with coppers dropping speeding tickets etc

As for trains, what I did, and it worked great was to find a bike shop with multiple stores - NBSMotors (www.nbsmotor.ru) have stores in Novosibirsk, Moscow and St Petersburg. To find one for other cities have a look through a copy of Moto Review. Ask them to ship your bike with theirs - it took 10 days and 100 USD to get my bike from Novosibirsk to Moscow. If I had rocked up a a train station with the bike this would have cost a bomb and been a lot of hassle. Bike arrived with no worries. They had taken my luggage off to crate the bike, but as I had locked it they did this by unbolting the mounts. Luggage was still ok though.

Hope this is usefull

same plan

Hello Fernando

Khim and I are in Ankara Turkey right now, trying to sort out the visas. We will be leaving in about a week. We are travelling about the same route, or at least plan on doing that. Do you have the China bit figured out yet? Might be easier on the budget if we could share the cost. Would be great to meet on the road in any case.

Ciao
