UK->Spain->France->Italy->Slovenia->Croatia->????->Istanbul

Hello! I'm about to leave on the above trip within the next week or so. A little unsure about my route from Croatia to Istanbul...any advice appreciated. But more importantly it would be great to hook up with people on the way - would be great to hear from anyone along this route.

Easiest way is probably Slovenia/Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria.

Cheers Matt - you reckon this is better than Albania --> Montenegro and Greece...this was the route I was considering but I'm on my own and I guess the Albania route will be more challenging...but to what extent I don't know. Have you got any experience of travelling through Albania/Montenegro/Macedonia? The main reason for considering this is because I want to do the Croatian coast line and wanted to avoid doubling back on myself...any thoughts?

cheers

Its been a about 5 years since I rode to Turkey, and my experience might be a bit out of date, so don't take this as gospel, but when I looked into it the Albania - Greece route was much more problematical. The border crossings were more hassle and advice I received at the time suggested Albania was no fun to ride through.

So I went through Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria which was very straightforward (or would have been if the Danube hadn't burst its banks trapping me in one town for several days and if I hadn't then been involved in a road accident that involved a trip to hospital and a week with my leg up in a hotel!). No problems at any of the borders. Bulgaria is very pleasant.

I came back through Serbia (Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary) which I wouldn't recommend - nothing particularly wrong with Serbia, It just wasn't particularly attractive and my insurance company wouldn't cover me for it and I had to buy a months worth of local insurance at the border (or they wouldn't let me in) at a cost of £40 or so. Quite a lot as I only intended to be there a couple of days!

I drove down to Croatia in 2009 and it was fantastic. The coast is really stunning, so I see why you wouldn't want to miss that.

Matt :)

I jammed down the coast into Albania, then got lost and rode into Macedonia, then got un-lost and rode into Greece. I thought it was bloody marvelous!
I am going down to Greece next week to meet Adastra but am going via the Nurburgring, Brno Airport (to pick up a mates girlfriend), Romania and Bulgaria (dropping off said GF at Varna airport), then getting a pillion ride back. I'll be able to do a better comparison then!
