I think most folks are going to be avoiding Russia this summer. Just a guess. Good luck with that though. Send pics when you get to Crimea.

Avoiding Crimea and/or eastern part of UA might be wise. Avoiding Russian Federation I see no reason as a traveller.

Anyway, we will go this summer.

Outdoorjim, unless you know different, I believe there is no longer a direct service that ships from Magadan to Alaska. The airline that Ewan and Charley used went bust some time ago. There have been a few threads on the subject. My understanding is that the route is now a bit more convoluted and some folk ship their bikes by sea to Vladivostok, then from there to Japan and onward to the US.

If you have discovered a better way, please let us know. There are many people here, including John (Roynie) and myself, who would be interested. We started looking into this when we came up with the idea for Inagh to China, but found no obvious solution, so we will not re-enter Russia but rather ship from China.

There are no issues that would justify avoiding Russia. There are several groups on HU that are travelling through Russia and Central Asia this year, myself included. Visas are already obtained.

The ongoing developments in Ukraine are being closely monitored and a 'plan B' is in place, but I'm hopeful that we'll still be able to travel through Ukraine in April.

Us too - four of us heading to Vlad via Mongolia and BAM. Skirting around the top of Ukraine through Lithuania and Latvia. (To avoid a visa for Belarus.)
We leave in June providing things don't go pear-shaped.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
