Trans American Trail

Anyone up for a trip across the US early 2010?

I am currently in Italy working off the gas money from a 4 month solo European adventure. Mostly pavement and mountain passes which were great, but now fancy some real off road action.

Will either leave my bike here, sell it in the UK and come over to the US and buy a cheap dirt bike.

Any thoughts? Takers?

Cheers

Could work out, I believe some of Colorado is snowbound until summer. But being British, my knowledge of US climate is a bit slack! Would May be late enough to get from East coast to west coast without having to wear 10 layers of clothing?

The climate means the trail is best done in June or so.

I'm up for it.

Been in the UK a few times--your weather is quite similiar to where I live--but a long ways north of the trail--so in respect to that--if your starting on the east side of the trail--weather is spectacular in May--not to hot yet. Yes, the mountains in Colorado could be cool in May (most likely, actually)--but IMHO--better than sweltering hot. But once on the other side of Colorado--the temperature would be quite nice again. Just my opinion

Hey, thanks for your reply. Sounds about right for me, being from the UK I am sick of the cold and wet. Although the Italian hills are currently the same! Heat not so bad, was 101 on the shade when I crossed a desert in Spain, if I kept my speed up the breeze was nice.

Looks like I will have to find somewhere warm to go until May.
Thanks again

I am also looking for someone to ride the tat with in 2010

I plan on riding the TAT in 2010. I was thinking of starting at the begining in Tennessee around July 1st. I ride a DRZ400E made street leagle. I am a 57 years old male.:scooter: I have had dirt bikes on and off sense I was 15. I am from Michigan.

Don't go too soon.

If you start your trip too soon you will run into snow in the Rocky Mts.

Snow in June

I rode most of TAT, Carolina to Utah in June 2007. Very hot in Eastern states, very wet in Oaklahoma, cool in Colorado. California pass (near Animas forks,CO) was still unpassable due to snow. It is a fantastic ride and I am hoping to return this June to ride from Mexico to Canada along the Continental Divide

Have just driven a 4x4 across Australia and up the west coast. Yawn!! I miss my bike!!

Thinking 2011 now for the trans am, would rather get the dates spot on.

Does anyone know if it easy to buy and sell dirt bikes in the US as a non resident? Dont fancy frieghting my hefty Cagiva for those roads/tracks.

Cheers
