The RhineWayRound anyone???

Hello everyone

I'm just new to this site although I have been riding bikes for the last 7 years. I came to biking later in life at the age of 36 and over the last few years I have been on a few trips in Europe.

This year I'm hoping to go again, probably late July or early August and I have a particular trip in mind that I would love to do. Basically I'd love to go down the full length of the river Rhine from west of Rotterdam the whole way to Andermatt in Switzerland then back through France to the UK. I've always had a fascination with the Rhine ever since I was there on a school trip in 1980 (!!!) and last year I went on the bike to the Koblenz area and Wiesbaden/Mainz. That covered just a small part of the Rhine and I have since committed to myself that I would do the whole trip sometime. This year seems as good as any other year to me!

Overall the river is c.650 miles long or thereabouts and I would ideally like to take 2 weeks or thereabouts for the entire trip. I know it could be done much quicker but I really don't want to hurry it.

I'm planning to use B&B's, Hostels etc and would prefer not to expose these old bones to a tent. Other than that I'm particularly keen to sample beer in the evenings and am most definitely NOT an early-night person. I'm really up for a bit of fun along the way, seeing the odd castle or two, and generally chilling out most of the time.

So if anyone fancies doing something similar then let me know. I like biking alone but a trip like this could be great fun if shared. To show my appreciation to anyone who makes the effort......come with me on this Rhine experience and YOU can decide on the route home again!

Wiesbaden

Hey Chris,

I live in Wiesbaden and your trip sounds great. My schedule is pretty tight, but I might be able to join you for part of the trip. At the very minimum we can meet up for a ride around Wiesbaden. My schedule is changing pretty fast and is pretty tight, but I will be available in Early Sept or Mid October. I would have more time in Mid October, but that might be later than you want to take the trip.

At any rate, drop me a line when you can. My computer access can be limited, but I try to check the HUBB at lest one a week or so.

If you do like 'em twisties then be sure to check out the area between the Rhine and the Mosel. There's just a lot of fine biking roads up theren and especially the weather around the Mosel is usually very nice, since the river's got it's own micro climate.

There's also some tasty wines to be had there. The only backside is it might be high season around there, high season for the elderly that is, since this might just be the favorite hangout in Germany for everybody over 65...

Anyway, if you have the time then check it out, if you don't like it, it's just a short trip to Cologne where you can party your guts out... :)

Thanks Buebo

Yes, I was up there last year. I went to Montabaur, Koblenz, Rhens, Boppard and lots of other places too. I was in awe of the boat pilots who could make a turn from the Mosel into the Rhine at Koblenz in boats that looked 100m long. Amazing!

I think I'll stay away from the over-65's though. I'll get to be one of them in another 22 years so I'm happy to catch up with them at that stage!

Unfortunately your timing won't really match mine. I'll be home again before the end of August but I wish you well on your own trips.

No worries Alpman,

If you make your way though Wiesbaden area, shoot me a message and I might be able to join you or at least show you around. I am will be in and out of the country for work, but you never know. We might get lucky.
