i am heading for Jo'Burg on the 2nd of may ,set up bike for a week or so then, lesotho, durban, garden route to cape town, then namibia ,across to vic falls ,then sort of north to egypt ,then germany or england ,anyone care to meet up on the way

Hi Dave, are you buying a bike in South Africa or shipping yours from Oz?
I am doing a trip in Oct. from SA to Ethiopia and around Lake Victoria over to Namibia and back to SA 4 months later. The idea is to buy a used dual purpose bike there, about 650 cc, and sell again when I finish the tour.

hey guys
i was going to ship mine but bikes are pretty cheap at the moment in south africa, look up doctor klr on wild dog website , i will keep an eye out for the yellow kombi ,i travelled a bit with a guy in a nearly yellow kombi in colombia a few years back, so wheres gambia,have to get out my atlas

buying a bike in south africa
Hi Canoe Guy,

Just wondering how you made out buying a bike in South Africa and how was the registration process? Getting a carnet or going without?
My son and I will be buying bikes there in Oct. and touring southern and eastern Africa for 4 months.

Dave,
most people consider the Garden Route as the ultimate trip to Cape Town. In fact, most of it is rather boring. There are a few sights, eg. the Wild Coast and the "Hole in the Wall" south-east os Umtata/Transkei, but IMHO the more interesting ride is from Durban maybe to Port Edwards and then into the mountains to Maclear area. There, check out Naude's Nek Pass,
the highest pass next to Sani Pass. Turn south to Uitenhage, ride through Baviaans Kloof, cross the Swartberg Pass from north (Prince Albert) to south. On top of the pass visit Gamka Kloof, a cul-de-sac going 60 kms into the boondoks.

The rest to CT is all beautiful, scenic country. So it doesn't make a difference, whether you take the Route 62, or prefer to touch the coast, maybe Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of SA.

I fly to CT and will arrive at the 11th June.

will set up my bike 'till 18th or so.

will continue north through BOT to vic falls, lusaka, over to malavi and then up to egypt or over to jordan.

did most of that and a lot of NAM last year with a 4x4 with the family.

I drive a blue africa twin with orange front mud guard.

VW KOMBI being a ' VW BUS' to the german speaking folks. kombi is a station wagon there.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
