Scotland Europe Russia Mongolia Siberia Australia June 2012

Hello

I will be leaving Inverness Scotland around the 4th June 2012 and heading to the Abenteuer Allrad show (largest overland travel show in the world)in Bad Kissingen in Germany in my Landrover Camper. From there will head through Poland Latvia Lithuania and cross the border into Russia. Will spend approximately two weeks from the border getting to the Altai region for some exploring. Some of the route will be on the TSH and some on smaller roads. After a week in Altai will travel through to mongolia at the border at Tashanta and travel Mongolia for approx 3 weeks.I will do a bit of a circuit and get down towards the Gobi back up to Ulaan Bataar. My plan is to then try to cross the border back into Russia north of Khovsgol Nuur (if possible?). Will then head to Irkutsk Baikal Chita take a little detour up to the ROB (time permitting). Then back take in some of the BAM and finish in Vlad at the end of August. I need a high cube container as Landrover is 2.6m high. As high cube container is 40 ft long I will have space to share shipping back to australia if anybody is interested.

Would love to meet up with others (cars and bikes) along the way or maybe travel some parts together where things will get adventurous. Will have full first aid kit and quite a lot of mechanical knowledge.

Anybody travelling or likely to be in the same area please get intouch.

Callum and Michele (and Hamish the Landrover)

There are only 2 parts of the BAM - west and east of Tynda. Once on either there is no early exit.
I am not trying to dampen enthusiasm (or enhance our own trip) but I cannot see any 4 wheeled vehicle doing any meaningful part of the BAM and continuing to do further exploits.

Totally, totally forget the BAM east of Tynda if on 4 wheels.

The western section to Tynda was driven by Michael Rej in 2009 (we met him coming the other way). He has been for many years at the top of the game of 4X4 adventure driving and from that his knowledge and fund raising sponsorship abilities ensure he knows and gets the very best equipped vehicles.
His vehicles were so badly knackered by Tynda he had to seriously curtail his onward expedition in Mongolia and barely got them back home to Poland.

Read this thread for more information and cautions
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...a-2012-a-59454
specifically from my post number 24, on the second page, onwards.

The BAM is one of life's last great challenges and I was lucky enough to have seen both west and east parts. Only 5 people in the World claim to doing the east section (all on bikes) and only 3 of those went on to do the west section as well. We all genuinely welcome others to this fairly exclusive group.

BUT

4 wheels ?
Think very, very seriously!
It's no picnic outing and once started there is no way out but back or onwards in a remote environment.
The only 'safety net' is the active railway line, but that itself could also be the killer.

Leigh and I will be out there around the same time. If you see a White Tenere stuck It will be us ...The kettle will be on

If anyone else is out that way at the end of August and would like to share a container to ship to the states/Canada/Or Alaska that would be great.

Hi I’ll be on a DRZ400 cross Russia (June / July) / Kazakhstan / Mongolia leaving Zurich 1st June Arriving China border around 1st September. I would love to meet up with folks crossing Russia as I’m still a bit nervous of doing Russia as a solo female wimp!!!
(Plans will be finalized by end Feb as I’m still researching the tours I need to join to cross China)

I'll be in the Russia-ish area sometime around then too! I'm still working out exactly what I'm doing, but I'll keep my eye on this thread.

LSpence - would be very interested in what you find out about China if you don't mind sharing! I hadn't planned to go that far, but my plans are moveable feasts!

Thanks

Birdy

Hi Birdy
You cannot cross China alone as you must be accompanied by an English speaking guide. There is also quiet a lot of paperwork to arrange beforehand. I’ve looked into doing this myself and its near impossible, Chinese drivers license, permits for each state etc etc. the only real way to do it is to join a group or contact a reputable overland travel agency that will sort it out for you. It’s pretty expensive and costs thousands. So a group is really the best option. There are 3 groups crossing china in September all starting from Kyrgyzstan. I was hoping to cross over from Mongolia in September.
Happy to share more if you drop me a note.
Ciao
