san pedro de atacama now
 

Hello fellow travellers

Anyway in San Pedro now or soon and plan to head to Uyuni, Bolivia from there? I am in Salta at the moment and plan to head over to San Pedro de Atacama on Monday.

Anybody?
Or does anyone have some info on the recent road conditions. I realise the dry season doesn´t really start til May..

I am in Santiago and am leaving tomorrow for Mendoza before heading up to San Pedro de Atatcama.

I would be good to catch up with you, but am not sure of your timescale.

Which pass did you take over to San Pedro de Atacama, was it the Jama?

I was heading that way in July and wanted to try the lower 'paso de sico'. Everyone I spoke to said: "Oh no! You want to go via 'paso de jama', but I look for the more desolate route.

Anyway, we were turned back at the border of Argentina at Foz so we never got to try it. We ended up hoofing it back to Peru via the length of Bolivia from Corumba, Brazil to Juliaca, Peru. Until that we had tried to avoid Bolivia, but it turned out to be the highlight of the trip.

I am in Uyuni now and will head into the salt tomorrow (thousday) maybe I will catch you somewhere along the road. I am going to san pedro.

Mail me if at pkongsbak( att )hotmail( . )com if you can I will check tomorrow before I leave and on the route if possible.

Everything is dry and there should be no water on the salt. The sky is blue so it is beautyfull. The road down to uyuni and around the salt is dry.

I have talked to some tour guides and they say that it is not a problem to obtain, gas, water, food and accomodation in the area. Especially if you follow the tour route down the chilean border. The road is also in decent condition, according to them.

I ended up going over Paso de Jama today. This is an excellent pavement road the whole way and not a lot of traffic. Very pretty too.
Paul, you are going to love Northwest Argentina. The scenery is fantastic and the roads are awesome. The ol Vstrom loved it all.

Peter, thanks a lot for the up to date information. Unfortunately I have had a change of plans because I lost my camera (left it behind at an Internet Cafe in Salta... not happy, but my own fault). Since I need to buy a new one I have decided to head further north in Chile first, to Iquique since it has a tax free zone. Plan to make a dash up there tomorrow.. After that I plan to head across into bolivia. Not sure which road to take yet but am determined to reach uyuni..

Thanks for the information. I rode from Santiago to just outside Mendoza yesterday - the V-Strom took it all in it's stride and loved the hairpins on the Chileans side!

I am a few days behind you , but will start riding up north today; hopefully we'll catch up.
