San pedro de Atacama(Chile) to Uyuni (Bolivia)

It got the better of me last time...
It's entirely the wrong way to enter Bolivia from Chile on 2 wheels.
It's high, it's dry, it's roads in name only.
I did it on my South America trip 2 years ago and it's the hardest thing I've ever done on a bike. I did it but just and I felt it got the better of me. There is a reason you don't see other bikes on this route (only 4x4 guided tours).
I did it on my heavily laden BMW 1200 GSA on road tyres. Knobblies would have helped a lot, a lighter bike would have made it fun. It is one of the most amazing landscapes anywhere and should be fun
So here's the deal. I'm back in Chile in January 2014 and I want to complete that route and enjoy it this time. Would prefer to do it with another biker.
I'm travelling on my GSA again but will either set the bike up properly for it this time - proper off road tyres and minimum load.
If you are around that part of the world, second have of January '14 and fancy a few days of challenge....
Let me know

The very same experience, only going from Bolivia to Argentina. The Challapata - Uyuni - Tupiza ´road´was exactly as you´ve described and though the views were absolutely stunning all I wanted to do was get the hell out of there ASAP.

Am in Argetnina atm heading south, but will be coming back up north round Jan so could join.
