Russia Tour March 2007

Hi @ all,

setting off in March 2007 I will be travelling from Cologne via Italy and Romania into Russia and over to the other end, to Vladivostok.

It would be great to get in contact with other travellers so we can catch up and drive together for a while.

Looking forward reading from you

Leonie

Hi there "Leoni"

Even though I would like to, guess no chance for me to join.

Despite that my offer (I made to others, too) - if you should decide to continue from Vladivostok to Japan, get with me - always willing and ready to help RTW tourers!!

Wishing you lots lof luck and success with your planning and actual ride,

Klaus

I really wanted to do this but all my friends said i was insane. How much time/money are you planning on? if you dont mind me asking? and when are you going?

Benjamin 17 Nov 2006 16:06

sorry im a dumbass, march 2007. I'm hopefully going to be in italy then.

Phil Flanagan 17 Nov 2006 17:54

Japan ? mmmm interesting idea.

Klaus - you mention Vlad to Japan.

I am planning to drive to Mongolia next year and then keep heading East to either Magadan or Vlad.
My original plan was to then take container ship to Canada. But, may partner may well be starting a job in Japan in September and so maybe the rout Vlad to Japan makes more sense.

Sadly my two wheels still left back in UK and now travelling in a 4x4 van.

Do you have any more details on this route to Japan and is it feasible to bring my type of vehicle in ? what sort of costs or time restrictions may apply ?

Leonie - maybe we can meet on route and share some beers ?

thanks.
Phil.

Hi Benjamin,

no, its not insane. It's kind of difficult but probably the safest and most interesting route. One of my friends, bedhist, has had difficulties getting the visa for Pakistan and I actually really don't want to make the same experience. Therefore I have choosen Plan B, heading for Japan via Russia. Speaking Russian should make it easier for me anyway. I am about to get all the Visa stuff ready and let you know how I get on, if you want. If you head for Italy in March we can go there together if you want. It's only a wee drive together but should be nice anyway and much more fun, considerating the difficult first miles away from home.

Leoni hope your trip goes well but I would look carefully at your departure date which may be a little to early to allow for the weather to have improved enough to travel safely so early in the year heading east. I my self should be in Russia about May or early June travelling on into kazakstan.

I'm hoping to head west out of Vladidvostok about 28 May 2007

Arrive Europe around mid September.

Taking my DR650. I'll post more info about my trip as I go.

So far I've
1. Bought a bike
2. Saved a pile of cash
3. Organised shipping
4. Figured out an approx route
5. Started building my panniers

Just working on insurance and visas...

Might see you guys on the road....

Will be in touch.

Cheers.

Mark

Hey Bartman,
Where are you. I am meeting a guy from New Zealand in Vlad around June 6 and we are heading for Europe via Mongolia. We are riding KTM's but different models.
We plan to go to UB via Lake Baikal.
Why not go just a little later and ride with us.
Bill

security help in Russia

This may be of help to you if you intend travelling in Russia, It may sound silly but if you fall the wrong side of the law or even have an accident - and with the growing incident of compensation seeking accidents against western travellers and very corrupt police, I think its well worth the cost and will be investing in this for my next journey through Russia.
MiG security -reccomended by the Times is really for Businessmen and covers everything that may be a problem, immediate assistance with police, Road side stops and fines, accidents medical and criminal problems recovery and investigation of goods and money - legal help and if needed personal recovery by security employees. Ran by Ex KGB and Police, giving Russia wide cover it is £160 month. Read up on the services offered which includes a brief mention where they helped out an injured motorcycle traveller after an accident.
The bureucratic nightmare that is Russia could well be by-passed with this get out of jail card and service. info @ www.mig.ru (emergency assistance programme) also featured in Times online 20 nov -World Business
