Russia and The Stans – May 08

Anyone interested in a three month trip across Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia and possibly up to Mongolia before heading back to UK via the Stans and either the top route around the Caspian Sea or Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey?
The departure date is set for 6th May 08.

michaeltharme 25 Dec 2007 20:44

I'm with Paul. Everything locked in for the trip. Leaving Felixstowe on the 6 May '08. The route is very flexible; but going through Europe, spending a week in Romania, then Ukraine to Kazakhstan and north into Russia, then head west back to the UK. Paul is probably going to turn south from Kazakhstan and head back through the Stans.
So, who's coming with us?????

maroonga 28 Dec 2007 01:54

I am interested in going East to West. Any chance I could meet you as you start your return West? I was hoping to remain in Russia until I reached Ukraine. Do you have your return route finalized?
I am still looking for someone to ride with from Vladivostock heading West. Any volunteers?

We will be heading east to west in 2008. We will be leaving vladivostok around 1 August 2008, travelling in a 4x4.

We will be heading north out of Kazakhstan into Russia somewhere between Novosibirsk and Omsk around the last week in June and heading towards Moscow then on to St Petersburg and down the coast back to Boulogne by around 26 July to catch the ferry back to Dover.
I'll post a more detailed itinerary of the route soon.
Regards
Mick and Colleen

Newfoundland,Canada to Ireland

Hi:

I am seriously planning a trip from Newfoundland to Ireland this year.
My rough schedule at this point is to start out mid-May and arriving in Alaska the first week in June, for final preparations.
My tentative route is through the Kamchakta peninnsula, Mongolia, Kahzakstan, Russia, Ukraine, western Europe , England & Ireland. This leg of the trip will run from late June through to mid-September. The idea is to wait until the ice and snow melt has finished with the rivers having subsided with far less mud.

I rode a bike in Europe for 7 years.

I am currently in Ecuador on my ride from Canada to TdF and eventually Buenos Aires which should conclude mid-March. This trip has taken me through 7 Canadian provinces and 38 United States as a warm-up. Then it was covering 70% of Mexico before riding south through Central America and continuing onto Colombia.

I look forward to hearing from other bikers who may wish to meet up and ride a part of both this and the proposed trip with me.

Adios Y nos vemos!!

Catching up

Hi paul, it seems we will be in Germany at the same time (08-12/05/08)? My route through Germany (main points of referance) is from Nurburg-Geissen-Erfurt, then Cheb just over the Czech Rep border, mainly B roads for me. Plus we might be in the Carpathians area about the same dates (22-26/05/08)? But none of these dates are hard and fast. I arrive in Zeebrugge 07/05/08 @ mid-day and may head for Normandy (sea the D-Day beachs) instead of Brussels (Waterloo)... not sure yet?

As it seems you will have to have a Multi Entry Visa for Russia, consider Kalingrad between Lithuania and Poland.

This isolated part of Russia is nothing special, but it will allow you to visit all of the Curoniun Spit. This is a strip of land about 30 miles long and averaging half a mile wide that is an interesting and very beautiful nature reserve. You cross by ferry from Klaipeda and the Lith/Rus border is halfway down where you need the usual Rus documentation, or you have to return by the ferry to Klaipeda and go the long way round, staying in the EU.

Do a HUBB search for "Curoniun Spit" and you will find two of my fuller descriptions of it, costs etc.

Catching up...

Hi Dave - we may well meet up along the way -
I am planning to cross Germany a bit further down than you but may well meet up in Czech or further along the way. I plan to have a look at the Adrspach - Teplice rocks on the northern Czech border before heading down into Slovakia.
Keep in touch
All the best Dave
Paul

Pamir Hwy.

Hi Jens,
Thanks for your mobile number.
I shall give you a call in the next day or two.
We could do The Pamir Highway? It only needs one more visa.
I have fixed dates where I need to get to Turkmenistan to meet my Stantours contacts but could cut out bits earlier in the route?.
Look forward to talking to you.
Cheers
Paul

Hello Jens and Tom,
August is a little later than I had hoped but certainly possible.
When you say transib I assume that is the Trans Siberian Highway not the Trans Siberian Railroad? My hope is to remain on the Trans Siberian Highway most of the journey. If you are heading to Moskau (Moscow) we could certainly ride most of the route together before I head towards Ukraine. Do you have a date in August for your Vladivostok departure?
