RTW on my own
 

Well here I am, got 99% of things done and the count down has started. House is sold, bike is kitted out (r1150 GS Adv) I am 37 and retired - it's great.
10 days left till I fly out to Miami and start my journey.
USA and Canada 15/08/05 to 15/11/05
NZ 15/11/05 to 15/03/06
Auz 15/03/06 to 15/6/06
SA 15/06/06 to 31/07/06

So if you see a 'Charlie Boorman' look-alike please say hello it might be me. Any travel companions would be great even for a week or two.

Sorry HU meeting is a bit far over for me, I was planning to just ride round the lakes and back into the US

Nelson is a long way west indeed from the Great Lakes! But Creel is on the way south through Mexico.

Mate! Make sure you drop by and visit us when you are in NZ. Try to organise your travels here in NZ (or just come anyway... NZ is only three travel days long if you push it) to be in the middle South Island for mid January. There is always "Nigel's Didn't-Quite-Make-It-For-Christmas-Party" at that time. Hope to see you.

Nigel - yes please, I will drop you an email closer to the time. Look forward to meeting you. I was planning on doing the 'Iron butt' challenge in NZ so if you and any friends would like to join me, more the merrier.
Dave - I will be close to you around the beginning of Nov. My girlfriend is coming out to join me and we will be doing LA, San Fran, Salt Lake City, Grand Canyon, Vagas and back to LA. Will drop you a line even if only for a coffee.

Since it appears you've allowed three months (!!!) to tour round US and Canada you'd be rather foolish not to see western Canada and the western US states. Eastern and central Canada ain't much IMO, nor is the eastern US, unless your doing Nova Scotia. The West Is The Best!

TIP: The best riding in the US lies mainly
in the western states. In summer and fall,
this is especially true. British Columbia is
also spectacular in fall, and you've allowed more than enough time to go to the HU event Nelson, BC.

You can do your LA, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Salt Lake (skip SL unless you're Mormon) trip all in 10 days or so. The best riding in that area would be around the Utah Parks, but not Salt Lake. You really need to do some research. So much to see in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and of course, the very best roads, Northern California, my home.
LA will make you gag, I promise.

You are also perfectly set to go to Copper Canyon to the HU event near Chihuahua, Mexcio. Going into Mexico is easy peasy
mate. Your two hours ride from the border in LA. Don't worry, they boil Englishmen
very well before eating them. You won't feel a thing. How is it you guys always get
our country so wrong, miss all the good
stuff, hit all the miserable tourist traps then go home and complain. ;-)

Complain? Us? Never. In 2002 I rode from Vancouver down to the border and down Route 1 and 101 to San Francisco, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Tucson, Nogales, Dallas, Crossville TN, Deals Gap, Blue Ridge Mountains, Washington DC, NY, Boston and Toronto. All in six weeks, 7000 miles. I never complained once when I got home as I love your country. I'm returning next May to ride from the East to the West Coast and back again, in three months, when I plan to visit the places I didn't have time to visit in 2002. Tourist traps AND good riding roads.

Just finished RTW on my own myself. Let me know when you get near San Francisco. I live just across the bridge from there.

Peter, sorry it has taken me so long to look back onto this site. Drove though S F with the girlfriend about a week ago and am leaving for NZ in 2 days, but thanks for the offer.

All points taken on board about which area is good and bad, my thoughts how ever are that everywhere is good the first time round. If I had just stayed in the west I would not have met some of the people I did. If I did it all again I honestly would not change a thing I have done, admittedly driving through central US is not the most fun on the longest straightest roads i've ever seen. The only thing a would think twice about is the ride round Lake Superior but then again I would not have bumped into a couple of strangers who gave me thier sons phone number and told me to call them when I got to Thunder Bay (I did but they were out).

Cool Harvey, you will find some great riding here.We have some great tracks that the bm could do(just stay away from the sand) the bmw 1150 does not like playing in the sand.I live in sydney and would be glad to show you around.
