RTW: London to New York Summer 2013

Yes another Ewan and Charlie copycat trip....

I was originally going to go this year, but I've got a placement year now with my university course so I'm going late June/ start of July 2013

Route wise:

London, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Repub, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Russia then Japan or south korea and off to the US/ Canada

I've done as much research as possible into visas shipping import duties etc,

My dad is actually flying out for the American leg, but would be nice still to have some company, especially across Russia :)

oh and for anyone that is interested here is my googly doc of all of my planning and budgeting, hopefully there isn't any personal info in there!!

plan so far

After advanced plans got scuppered in 2011, I'm early stages of planning Mongolia and back in 2013. Had considered not heading out until August to be back before the clocks change but open to options and joining you for the ride out might suit well. Will be keeping it open for a while yet.

Cool well let me know! I'm more than happy to have people just join for little bits too :) :funmeteryes:

WRONG !

Even Ewan and Thingy were doing a copycat of Mondo Enduro in 1995.

Not only did they take lots of advice from them beforehand they even phoned them from Mongolia for advice on routes.

What a shame the acting 'heros' failed to acknowledge, thank or even mention them as their inspiration and for the advice, in either the book or DVD.
"Hey, Ewan, I've had this great idea..." sounds much better.

That's show business I suppose.

I could go on about other points - but not now.

Probably more honest is EWAN AND THINGY (EPISODE 1 of 9) PREPARATIONS - YouTube

pympster 12 Apr 2012 13:29

Then again, I am copying the copycats not the originals :P Even if they did copy the route and the idea it was them who I saw do it (but the ewan and thingy youtube videos are very funny!) Ill look into mondo enduro thanks though :)

The mondo enduro and LWR routes were actually very different. Anyway, does it really matter who did what first? It isn't a competition. This is supposed to be fun, right?

Concentrate on the fun bit, the rest is faff.

It was Austin and gang that got me thinking and on the long roads, while you are at it take a look at Terra Circa Terra Circa - YouTube .

Have fun and enjoy , let us have a blog address need some reading this summer !!

stampy, I've got just over 3 months, I'll be riding an r1200gs. In terms of budget, 9.5k should see me through the whole thing (though this goes down if other people are with me!) Try and have a flick through the google doc spreadsheet! I'm sure it only makes sense to me but not sure how else to show everything!

pympster 23 Apr 2012 22:55

Nope never! However, I am being slightly more tempted at the prospect of just doing Anchorage to New York, not the whole way but my Dad said he would come with me for it. Hmm, I'm still thinking about everything so nothing is set in stone (yet :) )

Russia advice

You are at serious risk of being bored out of your scull in Russia sitting on the main asphalt highway all the way to Vladivostok, and you will see mainly the back of trucks (doing 40mph and that you cant pass), petrol stations and traffic police, rather than the real Russia you can see if you get off the main road.

Also trying to cross Russia on a 30 day tourist visa has got a lot of people in trouble before when they discover things dont always go according to plan.

norfolkjack 24 Apr 2012 21:28

I agree with Walter, the trans siberia hwy is just another asphalt road, go via the road of bones if budget and time permit.
