Hi Chris

I was going to tour the UK next month but had to cancel my trip for a number of reasons. I am tentatively interested joining you. Are you going to ship your bike or hire one over there ?

Cheers

Ozzie

L.A. -> San F. -> Vancouver -> Anchorage

Hey guys. I will start mid June in L.A. and drive through S.F., Vancouver through Alaska. In Anchorage I'll visit some friends, will go for a plane ride with a friend (who's a plane fanatic) and then off for either Magadan or Vladivostok. From there I'll be driving to London, but it's another story. I know I'm pushing it, but I want to drive from L.A. to Anchorage in less than 2 weeks. If anyone has a similar journey and time plans, give me a shout.

Just for the heck of it, I put the places you mentioned in MSFT Streets and Trips and ran the numbers...
comes out to a bit over 22000 miles (don't know about K's)
Straight thru riding, 8 hours a day, no stops, comes out to around 46 days...

I'm guessing you listed some of the places so you could visit family...
What you did miss was a lot of really good riding out west, also a lot of great scenery and riding in the east/southeast...

July is extremely hot here, and by September could be very cold up north.
Should be an interesting trip, although I'd plan a bit differently.
If you routes is as listed, you're going to hit cold and snow in Alaska...two months is really pushing it to get that far. But... that's just my .002 worth! <BG>

New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and of course California have awesome riding. There's also great riding in Arkansas, Kentucky, Virginia, the Carolinas, heck, almost all the east coast....which covers all the way thru the Appalachian, Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains... to name a few....
The middle of the country is flat, so going thru Canada is a good idea, depending on the weather....

Riding out west with my average speed a bit over the speed limit ( 85 in a 70-75 zone, not very fast), gas and restroom stops with no time for sightseeing averages 50 mph...that's on a get from point a to point b trip. I'm sure others do much better, I'm a slowpoke.<G>
You will want to make lots of stops, there are many cool places to see.
In the east your pace will be way slower with much more traffic and lower speed limits.
You might want to reverse your route, go up Cali and to BC and Alaska first.

Wish I could join you!
Have a great time!

i was thinking of doing it the other way around. i will be stopping at places along the way. im in no big rush to travel this in to months though im looking at 3months. and at a cruise pace since i will be on a old triumph bobber.:funmeteryes:

Other way 'round is more the idea: if you've got to be in Southern California in July, head north as quickly as possible. Definitely don't go to Phoenix that time of year...nor Albuquerque, Amarillo or Oklahoma.

Krashdragon has already run the numbers for you, and that's a lot of miles. A lot of those places aren't worth seeing unless you've got a very good reason (Cheyenne? Fresno? Fayetteville? Green Bay?), and you're doing a lot of zigging and zagging to no apparent purpose. Besides, the good roads and the good sights are elsewhere, and often far off the interstate highways you've mapped out; that means moving more slowly on secondary roads. Maybe you know this already?

Not meaning to belabor the obvious, but unless you're really, really restless, like to keep moving, and have little interest in getting off the bike to see things, meet people and enjoy the occasional adult beverage, that's a lot of ground to cover in three months. I'd vote for 6 months, but you'd be happier with at least four. Or: eliminate one leg of the trip, like maybe down to Florida.

Hope that helps.

Mark

i put in those places as stop overs on the way to the places i want to go to insted of taking the major highways. i do want to stop over in places and have a beer or three or four. its just a loose guide.:helpsmilie:

Hi Chris

Are all the roads you have mapped out sealed? I am seriously thinking joining you, in which case I have to buy a bike in US ( I am thining a cruiser ). At the moment I am trying to sort out the insurance problem. Have been contacting a number of insurers over in the States but so far all of them have advised me that they would only provide insurance cover if I have a valid US rider's licence.

Will keep contacting some other insurers in the next few days.

Cheers

Ozzie

THRUXTON_BOZ 28 Apr 2008 10:07

ozzie 28 Apr 2008 10:18
