Please rescue and ride my motorcycle out of Georgia
 

Hello,

My motorcycle (2005 suzuki vstrom 1000 ) is currently left behind (I ran out of money and came back to the US) in the republic of georgia. I'm trying to find a way to get it back someplace more accessible (Europe) where storage would be cheaper (with friends maybe) and using it would be less of a hassle. Anyways, if anyone is interested, I will get a notarized letter giving permission (for border crossings) to someone willing to ride it from Georgia anywhere westward (even istanbul would be a huge help). Let me know if you're interested, and we can work out more details.

free and "secure" storage in Brussels guaranteed for 6months or so.

I can see quite a few people now squeezing their brain, counting days, looking at the calendar, calculating kms/day, trying to stretch their holidays and saying "if I had known only some weeks before!"... me included! :helpsmilie:

Nice of you catch22. Unfortunately, I cannot offer long storage (my bike "sleeps" in the street under rain and snow), but I could try to help with some short storage in Geneva (CH) between hops.

If it helps, Momondo shows that 1 way tickets to Tblisi with Ukraine International Airlines are much, much cheaper than any other! (ex. Geneva-Tbilisi 240€).

I guess a USA registered bike is not really any use out there (if not for spares).
It would make a good 'paid' vacation, flying out there and riding it back to the UK, but the cost may be prohibitive. Would any extra paperwork be needed???? (I am EU passport)
I guess it depends how much its worth to you.
Is there no airfrieght companies that could arrange to fly it out????

not sure if this helps, it could be slightly dodgy..... "did you pack this bike yourself sir" ??? Is it insured, taxed etc.... are you the owner.....

Hi, I'd guess that the rider would need to have a registration paper for the bike, insurance in their own name and letter of authorization. I've done this with a UK registered bike and it presented no border problems. Money Saving Expert: Credit Cards, Shopping, Bank Charges, Cheap Flights and more gives one way air fares from London Gatwick to Tbilisi for £240. Lindsay.

But, as a couple of things to consider, I'm not sure how easy it will be to cross the border with turkey with a paper saying you have permission, as they seem pretty particular about stuff like that. Also, leaving it in TR is definately not an option, because if you enter TR on a bike, you must leave TR on that same bike. So passing thru may be viable, but for someone to leave it there is not.

The other way, thru russia, the same things apply. I do know people that have left russia with someone elses bike, & a document from a notary (in russian) giving them permission, but have never heard of anyone getting into RU with same papers.

I know the georgian customs put the bike info in the computer when you arrive, but looks like they are ok with you leaving without it. But, how long ago was this? they may cause trouble getting the bike out, if it has been a long time. I'd also contact the georgian consul, explain the problem, and find out if they will let someone else leave with the bike.

In europe of course, you can ride someone elses bike anywhere you want, but getting it to europe may be a bit tricky

Right now looks like I'm going to seek the help of the istanbul motorcycle club, as they sound like they have a lot of experience in this matter... I will keep the thread updated as it works out (hopefully) and perhaps it can helps folks in the same situation in the future...

If you can wait 6 wks, I will drive it for you from Georgia to the Kingdom of Belgium where I will find a storage free of charge (but not for years).

Pls send me more details (peter_@orangemail.sk), I could arrange to pick up your Strom by my son (he is 26 and driving Suzuki GS) and let it bring to Slovakia or to Denmark.

If you still need help let me know. I live in Vienna and can pick the bike up in Slovakia and/or store it in my garage.

If you need information about shipping the bike back, mine is right know on the way back from California. ;)

I would not touch this for all tea in China, or lottery winnings. My friend was asked to bring some sandals back from an ASIAN country,BY A FRIEND !!!!!! luckily for her, she called before she left. I advised caution , she prodded at the shoes and a white powder came out of the heels.

A lot of places to hide stuff on a bike, sorry if this story offends but CAUTION I think.

Totally strip bike down and search every creivice if ok no problem, but SMACKS OF

Moral of the tale: expensive gifts are not necessarily better...

I think sometimes I'm just too naive and miss those aspects...

How do you run out of money but have enough money to fly from Georgia to the USA? Surely that'd be enough money to ride the bike to Europe?

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole. (English saying)
