juli till oct' 2011 south Africa till Kenya and back through Kenya , tnznia , zambia , mozambique , Zimbabwe , Namibia , botswana , south Africa and perhaps madagascar .

All by riding a drz 400 / xt 600

Am interested but where does the trip start, Kenya?? How do the bikes get there? where does the trip end, South Africa? I think the carnet is needed for this country. Would like to find out more. I am in Poland at the moment doing some repairs to my KLR.

The trip starts at south Africa and ends at south Africa as well.
I am also looking for a way to include Madagascar on the way.
It's a circle trip , driving on the east cost and at the end coming back trough the Zambia botswana and namibia's desert .
The plan is to buy the motorbike there in south Africa ( correctly thinking of suzuki drz) and sell it back on the return.
What do you say?

I have the somewhat same trip in mind, unfortunately on another date, probably starting early november and ending late december/early januari.

I'm curious to hear how it went with you guys!

Do you have any idea yet where exactly you want to buy the bike?

about parts i still have made up my mind if i should buy them here or in south Africa.

hey guys.. just finished my episode 2 from jhb to dar.. thru botswana, zim, moz, malawi and tanz...took 10 days & 4200km..brilliant ride...would have loved company but met alot of people along the way..solo not such a bad option man..let me know if u need specific info

by the way things are currently rolling I'm go'na do this ride by my self,
are there a lot of rider's on the way?
and what about fuel ? what is the amount of fuel you think is enough from point to point?

hey man... i didnt meet any riders along the way..but lotsof mense report the odd sighting of an overlander zooming past them..mind u..some kids in zimbabwe have a shocked look on their faces like u a spook on 2 wheels.. fuel in malawi is a problem now! take note man..theres sporadic fuel shortages due to the government not having enough forex to betaal..so they say..other than that..you should have a filling station every 200-300kms..the roads are a pleasure..apart from the occasional cow, bicycle, school kid, truck..etc..NO NIGHT DRIVING..cant stress that enough..in alot of places due to high day temperatures, people move around more at night and your visability is very poor..i would advise taking sun0-goggles and also those yellow lens anti-glare driving goggles, both of which MUST be able to fit under your helmet.. please go with COMESA insurance as you'l pay anything from USD10-USD50 for insurances along the way..some travellers pay USD100 for insurance that should cost USD40..guess who pockets the rest. Some places are damn hot so travel pref with a body-armour type suite instead of a bike jacket..also have your rain gear handy so you can pull over immediately to put the gear on. Take your cellphone+ a backup+ backup cheaper (R200). Buy registered sim cards in the country as it would be cheaper than using roaming. If you have a smart phone, look out for WiFi hotspots, buy a voucher and keep everybody updated. Create an sms group using the +27 code so that you send 1 sms updating people who need to knopw where u are. Being a muslim of Indian origin helped alot because there are indians/muslims in every location, willing to help with accom, food, parking, forex, directions etc..
