Le hasard fait bien les choses...
Starting in May from Belgium and going for the Stans too. Exremely flexible on the routing.Would be glad to join at least for the more "challenging" sectors.

Hi Tiger I'm leaving the UK at the end of May. It looks like I'll be doing a similar route only in reverse as I've meeting a friend in Bishkek 24 July. May be we could meet up for a drink on route? beer

Is the Pamir region opened again? It closed in mid-2012: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...-highway-65451

and also this post started on 15Jan2013: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...n-2013-a-68324

Insh'Allah on the Pamir

The Pamir Hwy, and for that matter larger Tajikistan COULD open in 2013.

I hope so . . . but it's very TBD until otherwise known.

For the past 3 years there have been numerous rumors/insinuations that Tajikistan would drop the visa requirement, that the GBAO permit would be eliminated . . .

And then last year everything completely blew up with numerous deaths (of non-Tourists).

A ride in the Wakhan (I did it in 2011) is so worthwhile. Even the Pamir Hwy is a fine experience.

The passes/tunnels from Khujand to Dushanbe may be finished . . . the Anzob Pass is alright. But I encountered it in September after a snow and was forced (literally, by gun holding personnel) to take the tunnel. The tunnel is one of the most awful things I've ever subjected my lungs to . . . 20-50cm water covering the tunnel floor in near total darkness with numerous "potholes" which nearly swallowed a bike with a meter high saddle (!) and air quality that made the worst of east Germany compare very well.

I hope it's open in 2013 because that's the way I plan to ride "back" toward London.

There was a thread here (or was it on thorntree?), where it was stated, that the Pamir HWY had opened again.
On the other hand, I phoned some weeks ago to Geneva consulate and they told me, at the moment they were unable to give a GBAO-permit, perhaps in february again.
Cheers

You can go south through Kylob to avoid the Anzob if so desired, it is a quite nice drive.

Hi,
I'm also about to start the Visa stuff with StanTours. ( LOI for Russia & Uzbek. ) The guys at the Tajik embassy in Brussels are btw very easy going and helpful.
Let's hope that the Pamirs are open!
p.s. If somebody comes along, I'll take an Afghan Visa in Khorog and have a "snif" at the Wakhan corridor....... that would be the cherry on the cake :-)
