Omo Valley - Lake Turkana into Kenya - looking for convoy buddies

Hi there,

Anyone keen to do the Omo Valley - Lake Turkana route from Ethiopia into Kenya in the next week? We are looking at leaving Arba Minch on about the 28th and cross the border on about the 2nd or 3rd. Keen to hook up with another vehicle and travel in convoy if poss. If anyone has driven this road recently and can give us some info on the road conditions it would be greatly appreciated!!*

We'll be at Wims in Addis for the next 3 nights.

Cheers
Ness

Some info

Hi guys, nice trip!

We are making our way up and also looking for some companion around the same time, doing the same route but just the other way around :w00t:

We are currently waiting in Jungle Junction, Nairobi (visa). Perhaps we'll meet along the way, we'll keep an eye out for you turkeys :tt2:

Here's some info from our friends Rika & Enrico travelling with their dog Laila in a grey Defender 110. They did this trip last week (from Kenya into Ethiopia) and gave us this update. I don't think they mind us re-posting this.

"First day we drove until Maralal which took us 9.5 hours with some breaks for us and for Laila. We took the direct road north from Gilgil. The first part of this road had a lot of pot holes, but after the village half way it got better. After crossing the equator and Nyahururu you continue north on a a really good road. From Rumuruti the road is rather bad, especially the part until you reach the road coming from lake Baringo. After that it's getting better. In Maralal we stayed in the Yare Camel Club which was a quite nice place, but showers and toilets only basic. A water tab outside is good accessible.

From Maralal it took us a day trip (only started at 10) to South Horr where we arrived at about 6 o'clock and stayed at Samburu Lodge (nice people, nice lodge, 300 p.p.).

Then today we drove the 91 km from South Horr to Loiyangalani in about 3 hours which we could have done within max 2 hours, but as it was so beautiful we stoped for quite some photos and videos.

If you're staying in Loiyangalani, try the Catholic mission. It is a very nice and quite place. As it seems we don't need to pay for the camping, we only pay 150 KSH p.p. for using the pool which is filled with spring water. It's quite warm, but nice anyway. When you come into the village there is a sign to the right to Palm Shade Lodge, where the lodge turns left you carry on for a few metres and then turn off right. First, there is the Catholic school, later a gate and somewhere a friendly man in charge.

This is where we are now. Telephone connection is working perfectly here.
Now, our general impression of the road is really good. Honestly we would take the road always again. The views you get are fantastic and sometimes just unbelievable. There was no rain the last three days and when we spoke to Father Florian today who is running the Benedictian Mission in Ileret shortly before the border, he said there was not a lot of rain this season and that the rainy season is almost over. There were no river crossings so far - a lot of dry river beds, not a single one with water in. So, let's see how it is going further north.
''

Hope it can be if any use. Some other usefull info can be found here: PictureAfrica.org: 34: El Kharama to Jinka (Kenya, Ethiopia)

Cheers,
Jenn & Don

Hi Jenny and Don,

Awesome, cheers for the info, that's really useful. :-) would be cool to catch up on the road!! When are you hoping to leave? We're looking at crossing the border on about 1st June.

Weve heard from a few people that there has been hardly any rain,so fingers crossed all will be ok!

Look out for our advance party - Amy and Nick in a white cruiser!! We'll keep our eyes peeled for you!!

Cheers
