hey xlrdexter,

I'd love to attend the Sept. HU gathering in BC, unfortunately I'll be starting up my fall semester. My only window of opportunity fo some serious traveling is the month of August. Perhaps we can meet up for a shorter ride over the summer. It's nice to hear from adventure tourer from my neck of the woods.

Paul

Would you be able to leave late July instead?

AndyT 24 Mar 2004 06:36

I drove a pickup truck to AK in '93, and 3 weeks is a pretty ambitious timeframe, for a RT from NY. It can be done, but you won't have much time to sightsee. It took me 8 days of 12 hours a day to get back from Homer, AK to Madison, WI. Had to wait 6 hours or so once when a crane tipped over and blocked a bridge, but that's the kind of thing you have to expect, as there is only one road most times so there's no detouring. If you are going in August, don't miss the Talkeetna Bluegrass http://www.talkeetnabluegrass.com/ festival. Not a motorcycle specific event, but a guarenteed good time. There also was an event called Sturgis in Alaska the same week as bike week in South Dakota, don't know if they are still putting that on. Have a trip to AK penciled in for Summer '05, on a bike this time.

AndyT,

Thanks for the informative post. I realize that 21 days is not too practical for the mileage. Ideally I'd like to get more out of this trip than a saddle sore backside. May consider a more realistic ride for my timeframe. Hard to let go of AK though. Any reccomendations? (i.e Canadian Rockies, Yukon, New Jersey).

Many Thanks

I'd suggest heading for the Rockies, spend some time thre, and take note of how long it took you to get there. That'll tell you how much "foolin' around" time you have!

Just wing it, it's all easy, no hassles. Have fun!

Grant

ps - don't forget about the HU North Carolina Travellers meeting in June, you can get to that one easy! Great chance to meet travellers and find out more about all parts of North America from travellers from all over the place.

In my opinion, the best scenery of the whole trip was in Banff Park in Canada on the BC/Alberta border, and that is not too far into Canada. The highway they call the icefields parkway is a must ride. The whole trip through the Yukon is great, probably your best chance to see a Grizz, I saw two. I'm told that whole stretch is paved now. There was hundreds of miles of gravel when I drove through before. The top of the world highway, from near Whitehorse through Dawson City to Alaska is great too, especially if you are a Jack London fan. Of course there is something about going to the end of the road, like Prudhoe Bay. I plan to go up the Dempster Highway my next trip.
