Nov 2010: California to Costa Rica/Panama

Hi,

I'm going to ride my beloved BMW from LA (via Arizona, New Mexico) through central Mexico to Costa Rica/Panama. I'll start around the 20th of November and expect to arrive in Costa Rica in February. But both route and schedule are rather flexible.

Would be great, if somenone has similar plans.

I'll have a tent with me, but would not mind to have a nice bed + shower after long riding days.

Let me know if you're around or have some tips for me!

cheers
Marcus

PS: By the way, I'm from Germany beerchug, I speak some Spanish, but might stop a week for some Spanish classes.

Good luck with your trip! I'd love to do it again but just completed the trip.

Only tip is: Find Out Exchange Rate before you cross a border and deal with money changers/ Negotiate if the changer is 5% below exchange rate.

I was on the road for only 9 weeks with 8 weeks down / layover ( 3 months total).

Edmonton to Tierra del Fuego

Hi Marcus, I will be leaving Edmonton at the end of Oct. Want to go all the way down on my Dakar, I should be close to the Mexican border around the 3rd week of Nov.. I will be on a very flexible route and schedule, will have my camping gear just in case! but prefer bed and shower after a good day riding. Also planning to stop for a week or 2 for some Spanish classes, was looking at [url=http://www.bosquevillage.com]Selecci
BTW, came back 2 weeks ago from Deutschland visiting my children and friends in the Baden-Wurtenberg area.

Cheers Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,
Baden-Wurtemberg... that's not so far from my place: Munich :-)

So, will you ride the entire way down to Argentina?! .... that's awesome! How long are you going to be on the road? Any plans where you will cross the Mexican border?

Cheers
Marcus

By the way, thanks for the link! This seems to be a quite nice place to study Spanish...

Hi Marcus,
because of kindly reasons I´ll answer in english.
I am also a German, riding a GS from Alaska to Argentina.
At the moment I stay in Playa del Carmen for a rest.
To go forward is scheduled for December, but I am flexible.
So, if you are interested, answer me, may be, we´ll see us.
Have a safe ride,
Uli

Mexico

Hi Uli,
apparently you're having quite a good time. When do you expect to be in Argentina?

I've to admit that some stories are scaring us away from Copper Canyan. Did you face any bigger issues in Northern Mexico?

Cheers
Marcus

u-l-i-p.de 6 Nov 2010 01:09

Hi Marcus,
nothing happened in Mexico, not one single problem....we took the way along the coast and than towards St. Christobal and Palenque to Yucatan.
I expect to be in Ushuaia in early March, hopefully....
Stay safe,
Uli

Mexico/Argentina

Hi Uli,

great to hear that you travelled smoothly through Mexico :thumbup1:

Your remaining schedule sounds tempting and ambitious. I'm sure you'll have quite some stories to tell!

Take care!
Marcus

Since I just realized that I've met you already (Hechlingen, May 2010), I'll send you a PM!

u-l-i-p.de 6 Nov 2010 22:04

Hi Marcus,
thank you for the PM!
What a surprise that we met in Hechlingen alreadydoh!
I try to answer your PM, if it don´t work, I´ll post again at this spot.
See you,
UliP.

Salve Marcus,

I have a similar plan. I'm staying now on the Baja California (La Plaz). End of November I will take the ferry to Mazatlan and than (slowly) going down to Guatamala, maybe further on to Panama and then return to Mexico. End of March 2011 I must be back in Cancun.

I'm also a German, riding a KLR650, have a tent and all the camping stuff with me, but mostly I sleep in a bed ...

This year, from January till Mai, I'm riding alone through Mexico, but would like to join someone else for the trip down south.

Hi

Hey Marcus,
how's it going? I'm taking a similar trip but intend to travel down the East coast of Mexico and across into San Christobel. I have travelled down the East coast of Florida and up the Gulf coast and I'm preparing to cross the border at Matamoros within the next week or so, I'm in Texas at the mo and need to service the Bike. So give me a shout if you are interested in travelling a few miles with me.

Good luck, Aaron

Hi Alteisen, Aaron!

Due to circumstances - at least partially - beyond my control, I had to change my route and schedule significantly. Now, I'll start my postponed trip from Cancun (Mexico) heading South on December 7th.

Would be nice to bump into you on route. I'll keep you posted about the details of my trip ...

Take care & have fun!
Marcus
