Nordkap and Murmansk June 2014

I am planning a trip through Norway to Nordkapp and Murmansk and returning through Finland, St. Petersburg and the Baltic States in June next year.
I hope to take the DFDS ferry from Immingham to Brevik and return from Esbjerg to Immingham.
I will be riding a Yamaha YBR 125 and camping, though will use cheap accommodation where possible.
I've previously done 2 similar distance trips in the last 2 years, to Spain and Portugal and through eastern europe to Istanbul.
It would be good to hear from anyone who plans to do the same or similar and would like to meet up along the way or from anyone who has done it before.

Cheers

Hi Mike

My wife and I will be in Norway in June riding to Nordkapp and coming down through Finland and turning east to St. Petersburg on our way to Vladivostok. We are riding from Zambia around the world for our orphans in Zambia (Nomad Sports Academy | Zambia)

We would be glad to join you on that leg of Scandinavia.

Hi John

That sounds like a fantastic journey you are both on. It would be great to get together during your trip through Scandinavia. I hope to have a fairly detailed itinery sorted out by early next year. I was on a caving expedition to arctic Norway when I was a teenager and worked, for a couple of months at a mine in northern Sweden close to the Norwegian border whilst at university, so I intend dropping in on those places just for old times sake, otherwise I'm flexible about the route.

Please keep in touch.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have advanced plans to do more or less an identical route to the one you describe, apart from taking a ferry from Helsinki to Tallin rather than to go via St Petersburg. I had intended to do it this year but due to other commitments it will not be possible, and therefore I have had to postpone my plans until next year. I have been to Norway 4 times before over several years - it was always very expensive but when I was there last year the prices were just eye-watering! Doing it on a 125 and camping makes a huge amount of sense, and it would help to avoid a speeding ticket which is seriously bad news over there. I am not too far away from you so it may be worthwhile meeting up to discuss this further, if you wish.

Regards,

1moremile

Sounds like it would be good if we could align our plans for next year. You obviously have a lot more recent experience of Norway than I do and your plans a lot further advanced.
Yes, let's arrange to meet up somewhere convenient if you're not too far away. Email me and suggest somewhere.

Cheers

Mike

June 2014 after Hubb Uk?

Hi!

I'm planning to be in the UK in June (Hubb UK 2014) and then travel to noordkaap in time of the midnight sun...

Which would mean leaving the UK June 20ish...

All the best!

While I can't be 100% sure I won't be on the road myself in June (our riding season is not too big, so always trying to make the best out of it), but if I'm at home, which is very near St.Petersburg, always glad to meet another HUBBer, perhaps share a ride or show you around, or help find a mechanic, etc.

Do you have tentative dates for your trip?

Could you elaborate your route?

All the best

Can I also express an interest? I should be back in the UK around the end of April 2014 and intend being at the HU meet. Perhaps a group meeting there then heading north. I should have my 1200GS back on the road then so plenty of space to avoid an alcohol free Norway leg. Only proviso I have is that I must be back in Scotland for the referendum to ensure that Wee Eck is given his marching orders. Ride safe.

Great!

Let's start making plans although I wouldnt mind improvising as we move along..

I must admit though that I have a selfish interest. I woul like very much to visit Riga either on the way up or on the way down (must pay tribute to my childhood hero)

I'll be travelling on a Triumph Explorer 1200.

Best,

jazzmd

I'm off to S.E.Asia on the 14th Sep. for 6-7mths, anything to avoid the winter on Scotland's east coast, but as regards route planning, up to the top through Norway then back down the other side of the Baltic taking in the Winter Palace on the way and any diversions that look nice would suit me. Ride safe.

I had to search for that one, not having heard of him previously by that moniker.
You might like this website that was exposed to me by my search, for the first time (and it might help others who have never come across "wee Eck" before today :confused1
