New England-Alaska Spring 2008

Anyone heading up to Alaska around the first of May from the east coast? Would enjoy company. I'm on a f650 and planning on camping. I'm open to route suggestions. Although I would like to stop in and see some friends near the Cassier Highway in Northern BC. I've just finished the Panamericana and just want to get the piggy home. So it'll be a quick trip between 3-600 miles a day. I've got a Corbin seat:)

Cheers
Sue

Where in NE?

Susan,

Where in New England are you starting from? We live up here in beautiful coastal Maine and Sara and I love to host travelers. :scooter: Sara's brother also lives in Homer, AK. Capt. Ron Ward is a Port Pilot for all of Southern Alaska. Do you know him? I haven't been to Homer myself yet as we have lived most of the last 25 years in Peru and Mexico. :thumbup1:

When you did your Panamericana, where did you visit in Peru? Too many people just stay on the coast which makes Peru look like the Sahara when there is SOOO much more! Last summer I took my 17 yr old son on a "coming of age" trip 10,000 km starting in the Peruvian Amazon (Pucallpa) then to Cuzco. From there down to the jungle and on to Brazil, south to Foz do Iguazu, then back to Peru via the length of Bolivia. Around the Block 2007 |

Anyway, if you want to head up to Canada, then cross to Alaska, come thru Maine. :welcome:

Hiya

Hey there beatsmewalking... I think 600 mile days will be the exception, so no worries... I agree Glacier is absolutely stunning and deserves more time. GSA? 1150 right? I actually am not quite sure exactly when I am leaving or how long I have to get to AK depends on work. I should know this week or next.

Have you done much riding? Where are you? Can you just pick up and leave? Let me know what you think.
the Pan am is something. It kind of takes on a life of its own.... took me three summers and a christmas and now that it is done... It's all good. There's nothing quite as sweet as setting a goal and accomplishing it. the fact that i enjoy grueling helps.

Hey Toby
Maine is not a bad place to be... I actually worked out of Mexico Me for a couple of years, but you've got a much nicer spot. I'll be leaving from RI to get up here and just may find myself taking the northern route depends on weather and potential riding partners. I was able to spend some time in Peru but not on this trip... Gorgeous country. I took the Venezuela Brazil route down on the motorbike. South America is a fantastic continent and was lucky to spend six years in Bolivia and Venezuela....

How is your transition back to the states going? I always get reverse culture shock returning to the states. I'll ask around about your brother in law Ron... I am sure to run into him in this wee little town. and congrats on your bike trip with your son.. looks like you had a lot of fun!

Saludos
Sue

Sue, :welcome:

Drop us a note if you are coming up this way. We have 2 empty bedrooms as our girls are at college (MA and Paris). We are in Bristol, in the center of the Pemaquid Peninsula (the lighthouse on the Maine quarter). May is nice here 70 degrees and no bugs yet!

Aside from working and raising our kids in Peru most recently, I grew up there, living in Lima, Ayacucho (near Cuzco), and in Pucallpa (eastern jungle).

You say you did Venezuela to Brazil... did you come down thru Manaus-Porto Velho-Cuiaba, or go down river to Belem and hug the coast? I don't know Venezuela, but where in Bolivia did you live?

Hey Homer Sue,
I'll be headed that way myself, but not until June. Feel free to stop by on your way out - I'm right off I80 in Central IL, if that's the way you take. Free bed, beer, tools, etc.
