Cool Namibia Botswana South Africa as of January 2013 – travel mates..

Hi all,

I was already twice six weeks in Southern Africa with my own 4x4 this year (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe), shipped my Landy from Europe to Namibia last February..

I intend to carry on visiting Southern and Eastern Africa until the end of 2013, staying alternatively for 1 or 2 months there (I already know most of the countries and am fairly used to remote and independent travel), and for similar laps of time in Europe.

My rig is currently stored in Zambia..

I want to fly next time to Zam next January, then due the climate either make a 6 weeks trip to Northern and North-Western Namibia or a 6 weeks trip to Botswana (Pans, Central Kalahari, Transfrontier Park), then drive to SA, Lesotho, trip to end either in Malawi or in Zambia.

I am looking EITHER for another party with their own 4x4 OR FOR AN ADEQUATE PASSENGER who might be interested to share the trip (travelling solo is neither very pleasant nor very safe, being with two cars widely extends the range of possibilities).

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY FOR BIKERS: MIGHT DRIVE TOGETHER THE AUTHORIZED TRACKS/ROADS AND TAKE BIKERS (UP TO 2 INDIVIDUALS) INCLUDING CAMPING GEAR AS PASSENGERS IN AREAS FORBIDDEN TO BIKES LIKE NATIONAL PARKS ETC...

Anybody interested ? I am quite flexible concerning both time and design of the trip, and I am prepared to travel before departure in order to make acquaintance and/or discuss about the project.

Thanks in advance for your replies, and PLEASE apologize for my broken English..

Cheers..

Ericchug

4x4 Driver

Hi Bolobolo,
I have an expedition prepped Land Rover based in Mallorca, but I am going to either Nordkap or to Vladivostok in 2013 and am not planning a southern africa tour until 2014 so we will probably miss each other. However, I will then be doing the same thing you are. We can keep in touch if you are still in southern Africa in 2014. Would also be willing to drive up/down either East or West Coast, but only with a partner vehicle, due to the same reasons you mentioned.
Can you tell me who you used to ship to Namibia; and, is the storage place in Zambia also open to other users. I also cannot leave for more than 10 weeks at a time and need storage for two interim months.
Cheers,
HKG

Hi,

It is not unlikely that I am still in Southern / Eastern Africa in 2014. I Intend to carry on visiting in 2013 (probably Nam North and North West, then again (I love it) Kalahari, Transfrontier Park, a slice of SA and Moz, ending in Malawi, last slice for 2013 would be Malawi and Northern / West Zambia (dfinitely one of my favourites). After that, I will have to make a decision either to drive back to Europe via the East or to ship my rig to another continent (probably Oz).

My Defender is stored in a closed garage for a most affordable price at Foleys Africa in L' Stone (they have a strong link to Foleys Special Vehicles from UK), they can maintain or repair Landys, Nick Selby, who runs the facility, knows everything about Landies. Another possibility in Zambia is Pioneer Camp East of Lusaka (Paul runs the facility)..

If you drive to Vladivostok, try and pay a visit to Mongolia (at the right time, average temparature in Ulan Bataar in Jan is -32°C), it is a magical place..

Your initials look something German or am I wrong (my Geerman is a lot better than my english!!).

Cheers..

Eric

Cool

Hello,

I had forgotten to answer one question: I shipped the Landy in a Container from Le Havre (France) to Walvis Bay. Shipping agent was SDV in Marseille (Bolloré Group), took 5 weeks including one ship change in Algeciras; very good and reliable service..

Cheers..

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
