Morrocco to Mauritania- September 2010

My boyfriend and I (both 32) are about to leave on our trip from Amsterdam to Cape Town via the west coast. However, the recent events in Mauritania worried us a bit. So now we are trying to hook up with fellow travellers to travel through Mauritania and perhaps a bit of Mali.

We will be at the Moroccan/ Mauritanian border around September 24th...In case you like the idea as well, to travel a bit safer for a couple of days, please give us an e-mail.

Hope to hear from you soon,

all the best from Amsterdam,

Flore de Vries

Hi to both of you

I used to ask about the same info on The HUBB/ ADV Rider

I have been in Mauritania before and after the kidnappings in late 2009. If you guys use your common sense, only ride at day time, plus camp at campsites, auberge in Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, it will be a great experience for both of you! Don't trust anybody if you don't have a good feeling about the situation.
Do the Diama Dam border instead of Rosso when going into Senegal. I have tried both more than once and you will not enjoy the Rosso if it is your first time in Africa. (Look up Rosso border on the HUBB, plenty of info).
The officers in Mauritania are nice, at least the ones I stumble into. They have supplied me with shelter for the night near Diama Dam when it was getting dark.

I would recommand you go alone unless you go with really good friends. It can be a hard time finding good travel mates, though I have been lucky most of the times. But that is just my opinion!

Remeber to get your Mauritanian visa in Rabat. At Fridays they issue it same day as you apply!

Hope this helps

Kind regards
