Off-road riding North Africa/Mongolia

Hi,
I'm an eperienced trail-rider looking for somebody (or 2) to join me on an off-road adventure. I haven't decided on a destination but expect to leave in 2007 as the seasons dictate. I have kitted up a KTM400EXC (23l tank, racks, GPS etc) that I'm shaking down at the moment.
Wherever we go it will be as much off-road as possible, unsupported with as much camping as possible. Kit will be lightweight (20kg max) + water and allow independence if necessary.
I'm a kiwi with heaps of practical mechanical and electrical skills and camping/ off-road experience. I will be leaving from NZ, flying the bike to the kick-off place, wherever that is.
I've looked at the Kudu expeditions, which appeal, but don't want to spend NZ$45k to ride an F650.
I expect to spend 3 - 4 months riding with no fixed itinerary.

Hi Ian,
I am planning to ship my '02 KTM 640 Adventure to Vladavostock from the USA in May/June of 2007 and ride thru Mongolia and then thru Russia again to the Pamir Mountains and into Pakistan. I think this route will have the most off road and camping available on the planet. I plan to travel as light as possible.
Mongolia speaks for itself. Do a search on the Korakorum Highway and the Pamir mountains, the Silk road, you get the idea of the route I have in mind thru to India via Pakistan. Not sure who has gone this way but it will be a good one. What do you think. Six months of riding for me. Leave the bike wherever and head home for six months, return and ride again. India and SE Asia, NZ and Auzzieland and then Africa. I have done North and South America. It's a big world.

North Africa

I will be doing a north / west African trip on 00 640 Adv, sometime in late 06 / early 07. I generally prefer to travel solo, but as I intend to ride a number of the Saharan pistes in Chris Scott's book, it would be good to have another rider along for part or the whole trip.

Trip timing / duration is very flexible but it will need to be in the saharan winter, as I don't fancy riding through in summer.

PM me if you are interested.

cheers

Response to Bill Schockley

Bill,
Sorry I couldn't e-mail or PM you. Can you e-mail me. What you are planning sounds good to me. The exact destination is immaterial to me, just getting out there, meeting people and to experience challenges and adventure. I have not done any overlanding outside NZ but heaps of off-road riding and enjoy camping.

Cheers

Ianh

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
