Morocco in April/May

Hi,

I'm planning on doing a trip to Morocco in April or May 2011. I'll be going in a Land Rover but am open to any kind of vehicle joining in. This will be my first trip, so please don't expect a guided tour or anything.

PM me or reply if interested.

Hi

Will be in Morocco in mid-to-late April venturing south to Senegal and beyond.

We are in a Toyota travelling by ourselves (wife & I). First timers too. We would be up for meeting up with others to do some more adventurous pistes , so that we arent alone if things go wrong

We are leaving London 4th April 2011, will do a very short tour of Europe (maybe a week to 10 days) then into Morocco. :funmeteryes:

Cheers,
Kevin

I have talked to somebody who has organized group trips in the past and have a few extra details. I'd want to leave after April 23rd in order to avoid "semana santa" (April 15-24 in 2011) as I'm told Morocco will be "swarming with Spanish 4x4's" during that week.

He also suggested the trip would be about 8000km total from the UK and people should expect it to cost 2500-3000 GBP, mostly for fuel. That cost does not including restaurant meals or accomodation otehr than camping and is purely personal spending (ie: I'm not asking for any fees). For those wanting to cut a bunch of driving out a ferry from the UK to Sanatander cuts out 700 miles driving (each way) through France but the ferry cost is around £650.

I'm going to do a bit more organization and post this on a few other forums. Once I get 1 or 2 people that have compatible plans, I'll firm up the dates.

I should be in Morocco in April also, I will look out for you guys :thumbup1:

Andrew, including UK-Spain and Spain-Morocco ferry fares and all fuel, campsites when used and food it cost me around £1500 for a four week trip in 2009 and maybe a couple of hundred pounds more this year only because of the distance traveled in Morocco ~ 6000km. I traveled in total 8000km in four weeks and that was driving nearly every day, all day which I'm guessing most people would not enjoy.

Anyway, first time is the best, you guys will love it :palm:

Hi guys, first post on this forum,
Me and my mate used to often to the south of Spain to ride, also Marocco. We found that its cheaper in one van taking the shorter routes on the ferry. But to really save money as fuel is one of the biggest expenses we would collect 100's litres of used chip fat from restaurants and run the van on that. Obviously newer diesels aren't quite so suitable and granted it takes a bit of effort but its really more than worth it. We once did falmouth to seville and back for just the cost of the plymouth-roscoff ferry. You should be able to take enough to get you to the ferry in Tarifa.
Worth a thought
Good luck with your trip

Hi Andrew
Are you rough camping or using b+bs ?
Im keen to tag along on my bike if that would be OK and Iam not fussed either way to drive down or get the ferry it sound like fun both ways.
Iam riding an Honda XR 600 so hopefully it will go anywhere but I prefer off road to tarmac,
Regards Warren

Andrew, thats hellish expensive, are you sure about them fuel costs?

From Manchester area, driving to Morocco (Meknes) and around there for a few days, then return to Manchester area, travel about 7100km, I know fuel cost us less than £1000, probably closer to £700 - £800

Dover Ferry was about £46 each way, on Norfolk Line.
Algeciras Ferry was 628 Moroccan (£63 each way) on Balearia Line

Totally about £1200, this was not counting food, which we took with us, and sleep in our land Cruiser roof tent.

So you will have lots of spare cash,

'vette

I'm going to try and mostly camp, but it depends on who I'm with to be honest. I'm hoping to spend as much time as possible off-road. I'm cool with having a bike along, as long as we work out some way to communicate.

Myself and some mates are heading there too, Landcruiser and a Land Rover, dates not yet fixed.

Me and my GF did a trip a couple of years ago and felt that we could have been much more adventurous with an extra vehicle. It had been very rainy that year and on one occasion whilst in the desert we got badly bogged down in mud. There was no chance of digging out really as more mud just flowed in to replace what you'd dug away. In the end we had to pay 100 euros for a tractor to tow us out. With another vehicle I don't think we would had any problems at all. see YouTube - Morocco or bust! 2008. Episode 3 of 6

Regarding fuel costs, if you have long range fuel tanks or a few jerry cans, bear in mind that you can fill up on cheap Moroccan diesel for the return leg. This can easily save you £100 or more.

We are leaving the UK 4th April and will likely enter Morocco around 14th April.

Will be in Rabat for a short while sorting out visas then will be out exploring some of the pistes described in the Morocco & Sahara Overland guides.

Just counting down the days..!

Expedition Maroc

Hi All,

Myself and a handful of mates are shipping our bikes to Malaga on the 30th of April and expect to be in Morocco by nightfall. Our aim is to head for Marrakesh so as to tour Southern Morocco and Western Sahara over a couple of weeks. We covered central and eastern Morocco last May and absolutely loved it. Some great gorges and dunes.
Seems that you guys will be there before us but we will keep an eye out.

Happy travels
