Mongolia on a budget June/July 2014

Hi all,

I am looking to do a 3-4 week tour of Mongolia starting either late June or July 2014.

The plan is to fly into UB and buy a cheap new Chinese bike for $500-$600 and either ride it till it dies or sell it when I get back to UB. From my research so far this will get a 150 cc bike which is essentially a road bike with pumped up suspension and offroad tyres.

This is going to be an adventure so don't expect an intricate route map just a rough idea of a few spots to hit and a lot of exploring in between.

There is a company that does self guided tours on GPS which might give a base to start from, they also hire tents etc.

At the moment I will be flying solo but would love one or more travel buddies.

I am a 36 guy from Melbourne Australia with reasonable road riding and offroad riding experience.

I would also love to jump onboard someone else's tour if they are planning on being in Mongolia in June/July/August 2014...Keeping in mind if you are on board a big BMW or KTM adventure machine I won't have a hope in hell of keeping up!

You'll have a great trip. As far as maps and gps go, buy a unit, download the free OSM map for the area along with Walter's waypoint list (Sticky in the N Asia section here on the HUBB). Bring your own tent/sleeping bag from home.

There are plenty of Chinese bikes to buy in UB. New and used.

I had to laugh at your comment about not being able to keep up with big BMW and KTM (and Japanese/Italian/American) "Adventure" bikes. Sure, they'll do a horizon job on you on the pavement, but in the dirt at least half of them will be way behind you, either because of lack of rider ability or their bike being wholly unsuitable for the conditions or both. You'll have much more fun than them in the dirt too.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
