Several of you have asked for more details of our “Mongolia 2011” trip so I thought I’d collate what we’ve got so far to see if you want to come along. This is not an itinerary; it’s an idea. It can and will be changed based on others ideas and input and how we fare once on the road. It represents what I and, I think, what Belle want to achieve within the timescale that we’ve got.

Rendezvous at the ADVrider 2nd Annual German Meet Whitsun weekend, 11, 12 & 13 June 1011, at Niedersolbach, near Siegen in Germany. Camp or take a bunk at €15 per night inc. breakfast, bring your own food to barbeque, €1! You can ride out or use the time to relax and make any last-minute preparations for the trip.

Weeks One & Two (14th to 25th June): Eastern Europe
Ride c.3000km (average 180 miles per day based on riding five days out of seven, camping or using hostels in when riding, finding hotels when stopped) from Niedersolbach to Lipetsk in Russia via Poland, Belarus and Ukraine

Approximate route:
Hannover, Magdeburg, Poznan, Lodz, Brest, Minsk, Kiev, Kharkov, Belgorod & Voronezh

Things to consider:
• Cost of and difficulty to obtain Belarus visa
• Autobahn, ‘A’ roads or “back roads” through Europe?
• Visit Brest War Memorial, Białowieża Forest, Mir Castle, Lipetsk
• Low daily mileage gives the opportunity to get ahead of schedule
• ADVrider ‘Anton’ lives in Lipetsk and is offering support

Weeks Three & Four (26th June to 9th July): Russia & Siberia
Ride c.4000km (250 miles per day) from Lipetsk to Barnaul in Russia

Approximate route:
Penza, Samara, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Omsk & Novosibirsk

Things to consider:
• There’s not much to see so maybe keep going and get ahead of schedule meaning more likelihood of achieving more later on

Weeks Five & Six (10th to 23nd July): Mongolia
Ride c.1600km (100 miles per day) from Barnaul to Rubtsovsk via Western Mongolia

Approximate route:
Biysk, Aktash, Tashanta, Tsagaannuur, Ulaangom, Khovd, Olgii, Tsagaannuur, Aktash & Tashanta

Things to consider:
• Visit Uvs Nuur Basin
• Ride an additional 1000km loop extending the Mongolian section of the ride from Ulanngom to Baruuntaruun, Uliastai and Altai before returning to Khovd

Weeks Seven & Eight (24th July to 6th August): Central Asia
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Rubtsovsk to Samarqand in Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan

Approximate route:
Semey, Almaty, Osh, Pamir Highway & Dushanbe

Things to consider:
• Visit Almaty & Samarqand
• Time needed to get visas in Almaty
• Political situation in Kyrgyzstan
• Possibility of overnight trip from Sary-Tash to Kashgar in China
• If behind schedule, cut for home from either Almaty or Sary-Tash

Weeks Nine & Ten (7th to 20th August): Three Seas
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Samarqand to Donets’k in Ukraine via Kazakhstan & Russia

Approximate route:
Tashkent, Shymkent, Turkestan, Baikonur, Aralsk, Atyrau & Astrakhan

Things to consider:
• Visit Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Black Sea
• Political situation in Dagestan
• The Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Bulgaria route
• The Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria route

Weeks Eleven & Twelve (21st to 31st August): Central Europe
Ride c.4000kms (250 miles per day) from Donets’k to Paris via Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic & Germany

Approximate route:
Odessa, Chisinau, Bucharest, Transfăgărăşan, Budapest, Bratislava & Prague

Things to consider:
• Visit Crimea, Odessa, Chisinau, Budapest, Prague
• Political situation in Transdniester
• Where do individuals cut for home
• Six-day maximum overrun from 1st to 6th September

PM me your email address for more information.

Not so lone wolf

I normally go out of my way to travel alone, but have reached a point where a bit of company now and again would be appreciated. It would be nice to keep in touch with some other motorcyclists doing Mongolia/Central Asia this summer.

I set off late May early June and do a very convoluted route through Russia, Mongolia, the 'Stans', into China and Tibet (end Aug), exit to Laos (end of Sept). I don't do cities or hotels too often, but it would be nice to swap tales of daring do and share the occasional .

Hi Les

It would be great to meet up and share a and tall stories en route if we're close. As you say, let's stay in touch and see what transpires. We're a definite three with maybe and hopefully a fourth.

Hey Wildman,
I'm heading to Magadan this summer, & will be crossing Mongolia somewhat close to the same time as you, its possible we'll meet up on the way. I'll be heading east from Bulgaria after the HU meeting we're hosting there at the end of May, taking the southern route thru the 'stans. I hope to cross MGL the first couple weeks of July.

I'd suggest on your route back, you cut across the southern tip of Moldova, on the main road from Odessa to Bucharest. That way you will bypass Transneister. I wouldnt suggest going thru there without a local to travel with.

Doug

Skip Transneister

Hi,
good luck on your trip

Totally agree with rtwdoug, skip Transneister. I'm from Romania and heard several reports last year of people having trouble at the border (bribes amounting to hundreds of euros). The main road from Odessa to Bucharest is good, I did it twice last year. When in Romania in the central are or near Bucharest, PM me, maybe we can have a or have a ride. Also if you need info on places to see/ride, send a mesege anytime.

Best of luck,
Adrian

Cool! Good to know. We'll hopefully have time for the Transfagarasan which will bring us down your way.

Hi!
I just thought to mention if you are looking for places to do maintenance for your bikes and perhaps buy some spare parts and get broken luggage frames of those humangous, metal boxes there is good bike mechanic Viktor in Russia/Barnaul Мотохаус22 - Мототехника: ремонт, продажа, запчасти - О компании His wife Lena speaks good english and you can find them through that website or you can go to Biker Bar in Barnaul and they can hook you up.

There is a guy in Moscow who runs tyreshop. I need to check his information from Northern Asia section but he is mentioned there. He can deliver tyres to any major cities of Russia and i am sure Victor can also get tyres for you beforehand.

This is the guy:

Victor also does oil changes and he has Motul oil in his shop so there is no need to carry extra change oil.
