Mexico/Guatemala in March

If I can get an opening from my current project I plan to make a run down to Guatemala in March to set up another project/training. I'll be leaving from Colorado and will probably trailer to Santa Fe or Demming and head south from there. I'm flexible on crossing points and routes at this time. I have traveled a lot in Mexico (but not by bike) and speak fluent Spanish. I hope to round trip it in 3-4 weeks.

Hey Larry,

I've been meaning to make a ride like the one you are proposing but, I haven't gotten around to it. I'm recently retired from education and interested in a mid, late winter ride down south. I ride a DR650 and a Kawasaki Voyager (for long road trips). If you have any further plans on hotels/camping, touring time, routes, etc, please post them.....who knows maybe it'll work out.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, I will not have anything definite for a few more weeks. I will be riding my 1150 GS and probably taking a more or less central route through Mexico. It's interesting that you are in education - the project I will be setting up is a training for natural resource planning, specifically a technical visit to consult on a section of the Meso American Trail that some Guatemalans are getting ready to construct. I will be returning in May to conduct a week long training. This visit will probably include a two or three day training and then hiking the proposed sections. It is in the area near Huehuetenango (from what I understand about an hour out). I would probably want to cover around 400 miles/day with some rest stops along the way. It's still not definite but if I can swing it with my work here in Colorado, I'll do it for sure.

Larry, I'll keep watching for any new posts over the next several weeks. The project sounds interesting. Bob

Are your plans set yet?

I just placed a new post looking for company on a trip to Panama. I am also leaving from Colorado in early March. Drop me a line maybe we can join up.

I wonder if Larry ever decided to make the journey to Guatemala? I might be interested.....depending on the plans. Who knows how many others might be interested?....the more the merrier.
I am recently retired (56) from education and have been considering a trip like this one. I ride a Suzuki DR650 for dual-sporting and Kawasaki Voyager for long slab riding. On this type trip I'd prefer the DR. I'm pretty cheap so camping and/or less expensive hotels (if safe) sound fine to me. Camping would involve more gear. What do you have in mind for a schedule, sight seeing, etc.
Thanks, Bob

A friend and I are currently thinking of leaving toward the end of February for Las Cruzes, NM with my truck and the bikes in a trailer. Leave the truck/trailer with a friend and then head for Guatemala from there. I do have some time constraints so will look to be doing about 400 miles a day with a few rest days, then spend a few days in Guatemala setting up a project, then return, hopefully with a bit more time for site seeing. I have traveled in Mexico/Central America a lot and speak fairly fluent Spanish. I'll be riding a GS1150 and my friend a Virago.

I plan on leaving from Playa del Carmen to Central America thru Belice at the end of the first week in March. If you are passing the border this way, let me know!

San Francisco to Chiapas end Feb 08

I plan to leave San Francisco on a KLR 650 end of Feb and head to the Chiapas/ Guatamala border area for a month. Iam organizing Canopy Access tree climbing projects in the area.
Your trip sounds fairly similar, good to team up.
Jim

Jim,
Are you riding all the way from SF on your KLR? How much time do you have? I'm having a planning session with my riding buddy from Ft. Collins today and will keep you informed.

OkBob51 10 Feb 2008 21:19

Larry, Jim,
I'm still interested in maybe tagging along. A foursome sounds good to me. What dates are you planning to be gone and back? Hoteling or camping?
Bob

We are currently planning on leaving the 29th from Colorado, drive to Las Cruces, leave truck and trailer and visit friends for a day or two, cross border on the 3rd and head for Morelia where Dave has friends, hang for a day or two and on to Guatemala, set up project and return, being back by the end of March, no later. If we travel together it will have to be fairly loose - I have definite things I need to get done and a schedule at both ends. I see about 400 mile days with a rest day in Morelia. I hope to put together a tentative route in a few days. We will be looking for inexpensive hotels/hospedajes which should not be too difficult to find. Semana Santa starts the week of the 16th in Guatemala which could make travel interesting if we are still there.

Bob, I sent you a PM.

Chasqui 11 Feb 2008 19:33

I am in Boulder and could ride with you as far as Aguascalientes where I would head West and maybe meet again in Guatemala later on the trip.
