Mexico, Central America trip, leaving late jan. early feb.

Hey, I'm leaving for a ride thru Mexico & all of Central America hopefully Jan.15 but no later than Feb. 1st. I am driving my bike down to McAllen TX, Parking it there then heading across the border. I plan on heading down the east coast, then working my way down to Costa Rica, hanging out there for a bit to hang with some friends, Then when I get bored, on to Panama for a bit then probably back to Costa Rica to hang out some more then back north to good ole USA. I have 2 months off from work so plenty of time to goof off. I had planned to go alone but if anyone wants to join me for all or part of the trip, let me know. I am riding a '99 Suzuki DR350. I have a 4.2 gal. tank so 250 mi. runs should be possible. Well, I got lots of stuff to finish for the trip so hope to hear from someone....Kev

Kevin,

Are you the guy I met in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua? From Kansas City on a DR350, homemade panniers? I was on KLR650 headed back to US after reaching Yavisa, Pan. If you, drop a line at phwiii@excite.com

I'm riding to Costa Rica probably leave California mid-Feb to late Feb. Depending on your itinerary and timetable wouldn't mind meeting up and riding together part of the way.

Dave, Kevin made the trip in 2000. I made it last winter. You can do it by yourself. Not a problem.

Looks like I'm going

Kevin,

It looks like I'm going on a similar trip. My plans are to leave Dallas around Jan. 15 and head to McAllen. Once into to Mexico I plan to head to the "Heartland" (Zacatecas, San Miguel, etc) then down the Gulf coast possibly down to Merida before swinging through Palenque and back up the Pacific coast. Let me know if you're interested in meeting and riding together at least for a little while. My and my Wee-Strom are fired up and ready to go. Anyone else is free to contact me as well. Shayne

Don't cross at McAllen

Kev,

Thought I would pass off a tip I learned. I, like you, originally planned on crossing into Mexico via McAllen, TX, but changed my mind after a tip from a local fellow from McAllen. He said it is not worth the hassle at the big crossing and that most locals use a small crossing East of McAllen. Its the second crossing east of McAllen(Progresso - the first one east of McAllen wont let you in if going to Central America). If memory serves me right, it is near Santa Maria/Bluetown, TX and has no town on the Mexican side. This crossing was excellent. I was the one person there. The Officials spoke some english. Everything went smooth, and quick as could be. I was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes! I then headed further east to Matamoros before heading south. Good roads for the most part.

If you find yourself in/going through Villahermosa, Tabasco, I highly recommend taking Carretara 195 straight south out of town. This will take you towards San Cristobal De Las Casas. This road put a smile on my face that lasted for days. I am sure the locals were wondering what drug I was on, if only they knew. The road climbs over severl mountain ranges, follows a river through a small canyon and has well banked s-turns, great hairpins, spectacular views, and virtually no traffic. IMHO, its one of the top 10 rides in the world!

Enjoy the ride!
