London to Mongolia April 2011
 

Hi All,
Is anyone interested/able to do motorbike ride London to Mongolia April 2011? Appreciate its short notice but i have a leave pass from the wife, cash in the bank and if I dont do it shortly its my last leave pass for sometime.

I have completed the mongolian rally before by van although bought a motorbike in Olgii Mongolia and did the mongolia stretch by bike. This time looking to do the entire trip by bike.

I am actually planning something similar, Amsterdam to Mongolia as of May. April is quite short notice considering remaining paperwork and bike preparations but happy to discuss!

For anyone else - looking at doing the trip in about 5 weeks or so from London to Mongolia as 5 weeks is about the best i can get off work etc. looking to largely burn through europe and spend most time in russia, kazakhstan and mongolia.

what paperwork would you need for a trip like this?
what bike are you doing it on?

April is too soon for me to get time off work but am interested in doing this trip soon.

Other people on this site will know better (actually having done it would help) but the good part is that a carnet doesn't seem to be necessary if you go through Kazakhstan and Russia. If you go there or back via Turkey and the 'stans' in central Asia you will however need one.

Visa obviously depends on nationality but for the Dutch it's relatively straightforward. Main point to bear in mind is that some are valid for 3 months after date of issuance.

Quite a bit of info elsewhere on this site by the way. And an ever increasing amount of personal sites (random example: martijnopdemotor.web-log.nl) Perhaps really obvious but I thought Chris Scott's book Adventure Motorcycling Handbook was a useful starting point.

Appreciate that you could do it on anything from a 50 cc to a Goldwing but I would also be interested in any advice/experiences from others re the bike. Taking a heavy machine (Honda AT, KTM 990 and especially the bigger BMW GS) into Mongolia seems inefficient. I would expect the BMW 800 GS for example is better suited but that's still expensive.

As I understand it, a carnet is only needed if you travel via Iran. Visas are required (for Brits) for Russia, Mongolia, all of the 'Stans and Turkey although the last is easy to get at the border.

Isn't London to Mongolia about 10,000 miles? Might be a bit of a push in 5 weeks don´t you think? or are you planning on flying the bike home? (I ask because I could extend my time off work and have the cash to do it, just not sure if its sensible to do it!)

About 7,000 kms, plus a bit depending on route so about 4,500 miles. We're planning on taking four weeks to get there on a pretty direct route, two weeks there and six to come back via the 'Stans. Details here.

I plan on donating the bike to charity when i arrive in Mongolia or shipping it home to Australia, one of the two. I have done the trip before by van and we did it in 3 weeks (lots of driving). 5 weeks should be enough and should allow for more drive free days - not a walk in the park but I want it to be a bit of a challenge and 5 weeks is the best i can do.

Hi there, I am extremely interested in your plan to Mongolia, I was planning to leave late April or May but i am ready to adapt my plans if I have some mates to ride with!
Actually I am planning to go to Japan and i am riding a ktm 990 adventure.
when are u planning to leave london?
