London to Cape Town Jan 2013 by LC80

Reposted with new departure dates

Hi fellow travellers, anyone want to hop aboard my 4x4 to Cape Town?!

I'm hoping to drive LC80 down from London to Cape Town via the East, route across the Med via to RoRo from Mersin to Port Said .

Hoping to leave London in December 2012 or January 2013, drive to Italy, probably ferry across Greece to Turkey and then RoRo to Egypt.

Route subject to change but keen on the following:
Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi (Mozambique poss), Zambia, Bots, Namibia and down to the beautiful Cape Town!

I'm a 34yo girl, looking for travel partners as would like to fill seats - preferably 1x doctor, 1x mechanic and 1x cook :-) - don't all shout at once!

Also keen to hook up with other vehicles doing similar trip to fill up the ferry crossing into Sudan, and to cruise with!

Anyone got any idea how long it takes to get a Sudanese visa - hear it takes around 2 months?!

If anyone's got any more information on the RoRo, or the Sudanese visa (time frame), I'd be very grateful.

Right, so who's keen to join me?

Hi chongololo,

If you don't mind, I'm interested in hearing a little bit more about the trip you have planned. Very similar to you, I have been planning on going down the East coast of Africa, also from the UK down to Cape Town, and also at the end of December or beginning of January 2013, but instead by motorbike. So for all intents and purposes, pretty much your trip. But I have been a bit saddened that being on a bike means I can't easily visit safaris. So what I'm trying to say is I'm interested in hearing a bit more..

Unfortunately, as to your requests for passengers, I don't really check any of the boxes you asked for, as I'm not a doctor, mechanic, or chef. But I can cook, and would like to think that I have other useful skills.

A little about myself: I'm a 27 yr old Englishman, formerly an accountant in the USA, where I have lived for the last 15 years. I left my job for a more interesting existence. I'm a keen traveler (as is everyone here), enjoy sports, ..enjoy everything really, cheery and pleasant to be around, and I've been 3 months in Spain this year trying to improve my Spanish.

Anyway, just curious to hear more,
Best regards,

Peter

Cool name, I remember playing with those when I was a kid!

Anyway, trip is pretty much what we are currently doing, left beginning of July and enjoyed summer in Europe and have finally arrived in Athens. Charlie the landy was shipped this past Saturday to Alexandria, following much frustration in trying to arrange the shipping which I thought I had sorted back in Feb as had quotes etc and was going to be out of Istanbul, anycase long story and can explain some time if you would like. I have however used a company from Athens (Primeway) who have made this process really easy for me and were very helpful George Lianos is the name of the guy that helped me. Did alot of research into shipping and could not find any reliable ferry or shipping information back then and then again when I checked a few weeks ago prior to changing course to Athens anyway if you can't come right try these guys, very efficient!

As for travelling south and on to home sweet home, we planning on travelling around Egypt and into Jordan during November before crossing into Sudan late November early December. I believe it is easier to get a visa in Aswan than it is in Cairo but I guess that is a bot of wait and see.

Happy to share some info along route if you interested and hoping to be in CT by end of Feb early March. we also have a blog if you looking for some info as we head further south which might be relevant to your trip if you leave later charliesoverlandadventure.com

Drop me a line if you in Egypt around that time and maybe we can all take the ferry and travel for a while together, should make security a little safer.

If not safe travels

Hello chongololo (how did you get that name)

I am planning a similar bike trip (on Petal my yellow GS 1200) my initial trip was in April 2012 but its looking rather doubtful because of adim (permits and funding) but its still a possibility. My planning for this trip has moved out to 2014 for the London adventure. I will be going as far a Niarobi in April 2013.

I am based in SA (live in Jhb) and born in Zim and have loads of contact in Southern Africa. If you are still keen me might be able to hook up in Nairobi and travel back down together from April 2013 to about May 2013. I have medical training and am currenty certified. My medical experience was gained through Parks Board training (Game Ranger), Recue diving and the Military. I can handel most medical emergencies and have access if really nessecary to various medical and cas vac facilities in SA. A Medical Aid to cover the cost is essential. My email address is 11369fox@gmail.com. Lets see what we can do.

Good Luck
