Belize info

Hi
See you just went through Belize. I am planning on being there in February 2013 and am looking for some info on ferrys. I want to cross to Honduras or close by in Guatemala by ferry rather than riding all the way around and back tracking from southern Belize. Found this in an old 2008 post.

Yes there are regular boats

There are 2 or 3 lanchas in each direction each day from Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios, and all will put a bike or 2 in the boat if they don`t have too many passengers. My brother and i paid BZD100 (USD50) per bike, plus normal fee for ourselves on the 4pm boat from Punta Gorda. Most people wanted to go in that direction on the 11am and 2pm boats, and so the guy operating the 2pm boat wanted BZD150. Takes about an hour.

Strangely the exit tax per person was only BZD6, whereas at the other borders the border staff and other travellers said it was BZD40. The customs girl there simply did an exit stamp for the bikes, and once back in Guatemala we presented ourselves to immigration in a nearby street, but didn`t worry about finding the customs building for bikes. And upon exiting Guatemala i just pretended i didn`t understand the SAT/customs guy and told him "cheers mate" and we rode off. He didn`t seem to care that much anyway.

We were already in the south of Belize after attempting to cross illegally into Guatemala via the SW corner of Belize, but after spending hours crossing the river with steep muddy banks and along horse tracks etc we met a lot of military! So that way isn`t possible, even on the walking track.

Anything to add? Do you, or anyone for that matter, have any recent experience trying to cross by boat. I have a fully loaded F800GS so not a light bike to load on a people ferry.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
