Ireland Scotland and Beyond

Hi Guys

I am an Australian who will be doing a bit off a trip around Ireland and Scotland and wherever else i can get to on my limited resources from mid July.

If anybody else is interested in maybe joining me for awhile it would be great to have fellow travellers along.

I will be landing in London on the 19th July. i will need to spend a little time in London to organise a bike. I will hopefully pick up an older model Africa Twin or something similiar like xtz660/750 and then head off.

any suggestion on a route to take, places to stay, things to see etc would be greatly appreciated.

thanks heaps

Guy Sambrook

the west is the best

Thats what we say in ireland anyway,
my suggestion is; if your starting in london, you could take the motorway to swansea then ferry to cork, the roads in ireland are pure shit so the xt will be more than enough, africa twins etc are a bit heavy,
from cork down south to west cork, bantry bay an over the mountains to kerry, iveragh an dingle are beautiful, then from tralee north to tarbert an across the mouth of the shannonon on a ferry, saves going through limerick,
west clare up to galway, north into connemara an up to westport, ballina, sligo an donegal, if you have time west donegal is beautiful also innisowen an malin head, otherwise east to belfast for the ferry,
from stranraer to ayr, ferry to arran then kintyre, saves going through glasgow,
north along argyle an oban up to skye, ferry west to lewis an harris, then on land again to ullapool, from here you can wind your way south again to fort william an loch ness then the grampians to either glasgow or east to perth an edinburg,
glasgow is the better city though, as is cork over dublin, dont bother with dublin, thats my advice anyway, theres only a few roads along the south an west i dont know, have fun,
may the road rise to meet you,
rossa

Hi man, plenty of us over here in the emerald isle to help you out.
Have a look at www.irishbikerforum.com and introduce yourself to them.
A lot of them are doing a photo rally of Ireland this year, means they'll be going to all sorts of unusual places. Most of the riding will be on good biking roads too.
E-mail me here, kevinb99@iol.ie, when the times a bit closer

Hello Guy,

How long are you over for? I am off travelling Mainland Europe until mid Aug, but if you are still around and stray into the South West (Devon, Cornwall) or Wiltshire/Oxfordshire areas of England I'd be up for a beer or ride out with a day or so's notice.

Applecross in Scotland http://www.applecross.uk.com has a great road/pub/views. Also the Beara Peninsula in Ireland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beara_Peninsula is beautiful.

Cheers

Hi Guy, I'm down in South Africa at the moment but should be home for most of July and August before setting off again. I live in St Andrews on the east coast of Scotland about 80km north east of Edinburgh and if you want a free doss and a really good brief on the highlands and islands, drop me an e-mail. Ride safe, Mike
