Bart,
I'll be coming through in May. Leaving Nepal mid-May and on to Delhi. Will also be on an Enfield but will be in a hurry as have limited time. Not sure if Enfield and limited time are mutually exclusive but fingers crossed. Even if this doesn't fit with your schedule would be pleased to meet up on the way. Would also be good to have company through Pakistan.

Hi,

Are your Enfields India registerd?

If so you can not ride out of India, only into Nepal, as of 2003!!

You will have to ship them out by air or sea!!

Bike is indeed india registered. Here people say it's possible to bordercross. Hope you're wrong but where can I check this info?

Indians will tell you whatever they think you want to hear. Do a search here on the HUBB on the border crossing topic. I've heard the same as Rik says: Exporting an Indian registered bike is no longer possible.

An aside: An Indian spec bike will not be road legal in Europe.
Good luck,

Have a old 1969 enfield wich I can import as a classic.Already checked that wich Dutch ministery of transport.Problem with this sort of information is that nobody has a "government confirmation" or something like it, and with a lot of stuff it is difficult to find out wether it is indeed true. I assume you guys are right about taking out indian registered bikes. Still there are people doing overland without carnet. Only one way to find out I guess.....

Hi Bart,

You should be ok with the “old’ 1969 Enfold, a friend took a 1972 Enfield back to the USA!!

If you can get an India Carnet, may be the customs will let you out!!

I found out from a Belgium journalist, who was doing a ride back home with out “paper work” so he could write his Sunday paper reports as he went!! He had to get a Nepalese registered bike, at a higher cost!! But as far as I know he made it home!! His name was Mark?

The customs on the India side of the border with Pakistan, I found very helpful. I had to change over carnets & I needed an extension, they did all this at no cost, but it took a day of talking & a day to the paper work!!

The down side! Their on the ball, they know all the rules!!

"Still there are people doing overland without carnet. Only one way to find out I guess....."

When I was last at that border crossing, I meet a French family, in a camper van, on Dutch plates! Who had made it all the way to the India border, but the customs would not let them in with out a Carnet!!

The customs people really had tried to help them & let them leave their van in the custom house safe parking!!

Why not go up & speak to them?

Ride Free, Ride Safe, Ride one more mile,

G'day all,
I'm in southern India at the moment, and it's hot! I recently escaped the clutches of Chennai customs with my R65 and will be heading up the west coast of India to Mumbai before getting some visa's in Delhi. If anyone is in the vicinity drop me a line, it would be good to catch up.
Sean.
