I am going to be leaving Quito for Peru in the next few days and was wondering if anyone else is going that way at the moment.

What the hell have you been up to? It seems like ages ago since we left in Salento, did you get in touch with diego? we are just about to leave Santiago after catching the Dakar. There are still some stragglers up your way I'm sure you'll hit them on the way down (not literally)

Olly, I hope your g.f. appreciates the sacrifices you made in order to spend the holidays....and that you've used the time productively to thoroughly expunge the saltwater from your brake servos!

Meanwhile, a whole passel of us seem to be bottlenecking down on both sides of the Argentina/Chile border down south; I'm in El Bolson contemplating Antarctic possibilities, and a few from John's Southbound list are already headed back northwards.....but there are still stragglers up north, so you ought to find company somewhere.

I am probably the 1 before last (i.e. you :). Now in Lima, leaving in the next couple of days to go do some hiking in Arequipa, then probably hit the Chilean border mid next week. I think your heading to Bolivia (?) first, if so, we might meet up in Mendoza since I'll be crashing there for ~3 weeks (more hiking/climbing).

SOAT in Peru
 

BTW, what did you guys do for SOAT in Peru? I can't buy a traveler's insurance, only being quoted the $150 USD yearly one (and I searched / asked everywhere).
Thanks for the help, this issue is really putting a chill on my ride through Peru.

greetings, i´m in nicaragua now, and heading down that way soon, maybe within a month or more.

vroum, i´m traveling with basic climbing gear. what places to you know for doing such?

also what is the soat insurance you are referring to? is it required for peru ? or more countries? did i hear there is insurance required for colombia?

Hi Steve,
You can buy SOAT (Seguro Obligatorio) or 3rd party insurance at any border for $5 to $15 per month depending on country. Check the "Trip Paperwork" section, there are better details. As for Peru, it's a different story... and no one I meet or rode with seem to know or have one. I just try to get out of it.

We will get to Santiago tomorrow for new tires, Ingo seems to be one day ahead of us.

Don't miss Bolivia - tough driving in the south along Laguna Colorada but worthwhile.Just put some knobbies on.

Thanks for the response so far but still no one in the area. I am all set to leave quito tomorrow, back light fixed and kit washed. It does seem like I have been here an age so will be good to hit the road again and get some miles in. Hi Olly, I´m Marco, I`m in Quito, well...I`m an Ecuadorian on a 2008 KLR who came from Florida four months ago and now a bit bored without too much travelling, trying to decide about keeping going south in a couple of weeks, if that`s the case I hope to catch up with some of you on the way. It`s a shame I didn`t see your post earlier, I would have like to have a couple of drinks with you and talk about the trip. Good luck anyway.

I am now in Banos, was only going to be one night but noticed that my exhaust was coming apart when I got here last night so have been fixing that today and plan to make a move for Cuenca in the morning.

Olly, the roads in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are thick with overland bikers---so thick they hardly even bother waving anymore. Make haste, before autumn.

In the meantime, if you need slowing down try this: head downhill from Banos down a spectacular, waterfall-laced gorge, then take a right turn at the bottom (sorry, don't remember the place names but it's obvious on the maps). Carry on through cut-over jungle until the pavimento runs out. Nice folks in this town, with at least one hotel and all other services. Then climb single lane dirt for several hours through a spectacular jungle gorge, over a high pass, descending to Cuenca. One day if you start early and stick with it, two if otherwise inclined.

I've got lots of other similar plans for you if you're interested.

Hi All. will be in Lima in the next couple of days, could do with some new rubber for the 1150gs any suggestions where from as seem to be drawing a blank at the moment???????
